Description Michael Stather 2005-12-25 19:55:22 UTC
When I start YaST2 in the co nsole mode (outside of X) it has an ncurses interface which is very great.
But what would e even better was if another mode was introduced. I mean to start an X server with settings which work on every computer (VESA mode like sax2 does in text mode), and start YaST2.
The best thing would be to ask the user if he starts YaST2 in console mode which interface he wats to use.

Actually I don't beleive this idea is vital - imagine just two cases:
1. server environment with completely no X11 installed;
2. you require to run yast remotely via ssh or serial console on the machine with no graphics card present (e.g. sun servers).

I know what you mean (although IMO SuSE is for desktop use not for server use, try debian if you´ve no X server installed *g).
I didn´t mean this to replace the actual YaST console mode. If you´d start it a you should be asked (in text mode) if you want to run it in ncurses mode or in X mode.
This is not that hard to implement IMO since Sax2 does this already.

I don't think this is a good idea - it would add another annoying question to YaST (it has enough already ;-)

What's the problem with starting X before you start YaST? Actually, you can even login as user and start YaST using "sux". This way, X does not run as root which even improves the security.

On machines which don't run X normally, I use YaST in ncurses mode or, if I really want the graphical one, I login with ssh -X ;-)

I think this would be rather confusing.
