Description Brian Sutin 2005-12-26 03:20:44 UTC
Summary: Yast reports install media not found when install media is available.

After uneventful installation of SuSE 10.0, Yast cannot access the install media. Tried media in DVD drive, in CD drive, and by mounting the DVD or the CD's and accessing the mounted directory.

On first SuSE install, this problem immediately appeared. The trick of mounting the DVD and accessing the media as a file worked. On second install
on similar hardware, Yast worked fine for a week and then began behaving
the same. This time the file-mounting trick does not work.

The exact error messages are:

Yast: installation source: "There is no product information available..."
    Yast: software management: "ERROR(InstSrc:E_no_instsrc_on_media)[/media.1/media]

By the way, when inserting the DVD media into the drive, k3b pops up.

Please reproduce the problem once more (to have a "new" log entry at the end of the log file), then attach the y2logs - you can collect them using save_y2logs /tmp/y2logs.tgz

tar of /var/log/YaST2

2005-12-27:

1) Inserted SuSE 10.0 DVD into dvd recorder/player
        Result: k3b starts...it shouldn't, since media isn't blank
2) Start YaST2:Software Management, choose 1 currently uninstalled package
Result: DVD spins up, but get error about no media found
3) Start YaST2:Installation Source, adding setting to dvd recorder
Result: Error message about no product information. k3b also starts again!
4) Mount /media/dvdrecorder. Confirmed that media is now on file system.
5) Start YaST2:Installation Source, adding setting to file:/media/dvdrecorder
Result: Error message about no product information.
6) Unmount media and eject with "eject" command.
Result: k3b starts again after DVD ejected!

Hmm, the package manager doesn't recognize the media, in particular, it fails to parse the products file and then unmounts the medium.

Could you, please, attach the file /media.1/producst from your DVD?
Comment 4 Brian Sutin 2006-01-11 16:14:10 UTC
I will try to append that file soon. I would like to point out that:

1) Both the DVD and CD fail.
2) The DVD worked fine for a week or so, and then started to fail.
3) Points one and two above both occured for two installations (I replaced
the motherboard/processor and started a fresh installation).
4) On the previous installation, mounting the media as a file failed to work
        several times, and then succeeded.

Aha! The DVD media has a problem, and it can't read that file. (Suggestion: it should say so!)

Previously it would not read the CD version either, but this time I tried using the CD and it worked fine. Perhaps there is some sort of problem where once the DVD fails, YaST gets confused about different media. At any rate, I clearly
need to get a new DVD from Novell.

Thanks!

OK, so, as the problem was with the media, marking the bug as invalid.
