Bugzilla – Bug 141048
No configuration options for Synaptics Touchpad
Last modified: 2006-06-26 13:12:35 UTC
SuSE Linux has no options in any gui hardware configuration tools like sax2 to configure Synaptics Touchpad mouse options. Even the most basic configuration options are disabled. These basic options to enable/disable 3button emulation, activate mousewheel, are however enabled and do work. Only by a manual edit of /etc/X11/xorg.conf it is possible to edit the Touchpad configuration. This undermines userfriendly configuration of SuSE, also since gui tools like sax2 can overwrite/undo the manual changes when configuring other devices with the gui tools.
We will discuss this in the X team. I think it is usefull to have at least a minimal dialog for setting up the synaptics touchpad driver.
The Synaptic Touchpads are part of most IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads. Looks like a large user group can be happy with at least a minimal dialog.
It seems not only usefull but also nessesary. Without the configuration file otherwise has to be edited manually, but it contains a big warning not to do so since sax generates it automatically. Any changes may be lost.

Talked to Stefan Seyfried about this issue. There is already a tool which allows user specific configuration of the synapics touchpads. The tool is named: ksynaptics synclient the x11-input-synaptics package contains the tools
