Bugzilla – Bug 141154
Yast2 no progress report during update of installation sources
Last modified: 2006-10-13 06:28:45 UTC
During the update of installation sources in yast2 (system update, installing new software) there is no progress indicator telling if the system is doing something or not. Since we use a 2MB line and it takes several minutes to update some of the sources this is really necessary (some of the users may have less than 2MB lines).
please try again and attach /var/log/YaST2/y2log after that.
You misunderstood me: NOTE: I use german language, so the following program texts are a rough guess: E.G. when the is written "updating source xxx" no progress can be seen. I don't know if the network is still working, if there is anything downloaded, how long it will take, ... As it is plainly a file download, a 0-100% progress bar should be possible for the individual sources. The same applies some time later, when the RPM-list is build from disk ("packet information is read"). It takes and longer amount of time, but no progress is shown. Better would be ONE requester with 3 lines instead of lots of different requesters: The current step done (updating xxx) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (a progress report) what's done currently (e.g. loading file x) If the progress report could be build to start with 0 and end with 100% short before all is done it would be better, but from my point this would be much harder to do.
why do you think i misunderstood you? :-) i want the log to see if there is something wrong. usually it's quite fast to update the file and the maintainer can see how long it takes (let's say in real life) ... so please attach y2log after doing it again, thanks.
I use KDE supplementary, GNOME suppl, misc suppl, pacman, java, commercial tools and FTP sources and the first 4 doing automatic updating (meaning reloading all the files after the frequent changes). It never was fast (and we have 2MB DSL at each line [2 different locations]). I use this or equal setups on ca. 8 computers and this problem is constant since some release 7 SuSE. Including the network-hangup's, but I think they are already fixed as another bug. Well - it took 12 minutes - there should be a progress report! I needed to delete the cached information from disk or else the report would not be helpful at all. Now it represents the state, when the I first add the FTP sources --> the worst case, which disturbed me (and especially my brother setup up his system) most. BTW: A progress report would also mean, there should be an abort button! I had to show my linux testing brother how to kill y2base to get rid of the hanging "system update" after 10-15 Minutes delay.
Created attachment 61873 [details] The y2log logfile.
thanks for the logfile and the verbose explaination, assigned to maintainer.
I'm sorry, but this is nothing I could fix even for 10.1. Accepting this report for 10.2.

Fixed - a progress popup is displayed in openSUSE 10.2 (since Alpha4, IIRC), downloading and parsing files from source is displayed there
