it seems I'm no longer able to format crypto devices if /dev/loop0 is already taken.

What is the exact problem? There was a report about a similiar problem not long ago so that this might be a duplicate. It was about YaST not configuring the number of the loop device correctly with multiple partitions (it always tried to use loop0).
