Description Martin Mrazik 2006-01-16 13:09:57 UTC
After installing SLES10 preview4 all fonts almost in all applications are much smaller (e.g. kmail) than they were in preview3. Although fonts in preview3 were little bit bigger than I would expect, this is too small for standard usage.
Comment 1 Stephan Kulow 2006-01-16 13:36:13 UTC
does the info in xdpyinfo match your monitor?
Comment 2 Martin Mrazik 2006-01-16 13:42:03 UTC
I don't know how to answer this question:(

I would say yes (i can't see anything wrong there), but I'm not sure. The output of xdpyinfo is attached. (I have Samsung SyncMaster 910T - 19" LCD with 1280x1024).

Can you be please more specific what could be wrong and what should I check? Thanks.

well, is your monitor "382x302 millimeters"? And to answer for you: very likely if it's really 19''

Next question: what does this output: fc-match -v 'sans serif:size=11'

And what does kcmshell fonts show?
Comment 5 Martin Mrazik 2006-01-16 14:46:36 UTC
it's really 19". I don't know the dimmensions (on samsung web there is sth like: 416.6x349.4x60.2 without stand).

fc-match output is attached

kcmshell fonts shows on Desktop: Sans Serif 11, fixed width monospace 10. Everything else is Sans Serif 10.

Comment 7 Stephan Kulow 2006-01-16 14:57:27 UTC
ok, so it says you'd get 'nimbus sans l' in 11.4 pixel - which is ok. Now it's time for a screenshot of: xfd -fa 'sans serif:size=11'

Comment 9 Martin Mrazik 2006-01-16 15:05:28 UTC
actually the screenshot looks quite good. E.g. the kmail also does not look really ugly. I can read it. I just reported that I liked the font/size in preview3 better and that I think now it is pretty small. The problem is more obvious in firefox for some reason. E.g. this testbox I'm right now writing in has incredibly small font...
Comment 10 Martin Mrazik 2006-01-16 15:07:53 UTC
s/testbox/textarea/
Comment 11 Stephan Kulow 2006-01-16 15:16:54 UTC
textarea { font-size:12px; } - so it should be 12px. Now try
fc-match -v 'arial,helvetica,sans-serif:pixelsize=12'

(your firefox may be hard coded to a specific DPI btw - you can find that out by starting FC_DEBUG=1 firefox). But that would be a firefox issue and not KDE.

add firefox: I'm using firefox from SuSE distribution (SLES10).
Comment 13 Stephan Kulow 2006-01-16 15:29:43 UTC
that information is fine too
Comment 14 Martin Mrazik 2006-01-16 15:34:48 UTC
maybe the KDE is really OK. I wouldn't say that the KDE look is unusable right now, it's just different from preview3. Maybe this is really a firefox problem....
Comment 15 Wolfgang Rosenauer 2006-01-16 15:52:38 UTC
What are your font settings in Firefox?
Especially interesting are the monospace fonts if you speak about textareas.
So font.name.monospace.x-unicode is most likely the font which is used for textareas in our bugzilla. This might be "Courier" in your case. Please set it to "monospace" and see if it looks better.
Comment 16 Martin Mrazik 2006-01-16 16:00:40 UTC
Yes. There was Courier. I've changed that to SUSE Sans Mono (there was no "monospace" in the selection - however kcmshell is saying I'm using monospace in kde) and now it's fine.

Can this be default in SLES?
Comment 17 Wolfgang Rosenauer 2006-01-16 20:32:35 UTC
I will try to change the defaults for CODE10.
Comment 18 Wolfgang Rosenauer 2006-01-19 09:20:53 UTC
should be fixed in BETA1
