[feature-request] add simple IP traffic limit feature to Yast
Last modified: 2008-06-25 09:53:17 UTC
In some cases there is a need to limit this or that machine in a home network from using too much resources. Classic Home usage case: Single shared Internet connection for many PCs at once. I don't want my PC to steal my other family member's bandwidth. In current version of SUSE Linux (10.0) - there is no simple way to make the Internet (or LAN) connection - bandwidth limited. The only way to do so is by using iptables, which joe sixpack users and Windows users can't. There is a need for easy GUIs such as Yast to make it. please: add a traffic limiting feature to Yast Control Center. Either into network interfaces, or into the Firewall. I think this is impossible for 10.1, but for SUSE 10.2 it is!
install wondershaper, configure with yast sysconfig editor: WSHAPER_DEV,WSHAPER_DOWNLINK,WSHAPER_UPLINK its barebones this way, but possible?
i agree with Marcus, but maybe it makes sense to integrate that into YaST2 network config. assigned to maintainer.
A feature request, please add it to FATE (the feature database) and set to LATER until the feature is woken up for implementation. (I haven't tried wondershaper so I would not limit the feature to it. SUSEFirewall has a similar feature too, FW_HTB_TUNE_DEV)
Yes, this SuSEfirewall2's feature for limiting bandwith works (can limit ONLY upstream) but it is still unsupported in YaST2-Firewall. There should be no problem in adding this feature into supported ones in Firewall, however Firewall configuration itself isn't a good place for that.
Reassigning to the new maintainer of yast2-network.
move to later
mass reopening all SuSE Linux bugs that are set to REMIND+LATER to change the resolution to WONTFIX (adapting to new policy)
Closing old LATER+REMIND bugs as WONTFIX - if you still plan to work on it, feel free to reopen and set to ASSIGNED. In case the report saw repeated reopen comments, it's due to bugzilla timing out on the huge request ;(
