Hello

My USB Stick isn't detected. It's a creative MuVo Mp3 Player.

Jan 24 08:44:11 linux klogd: usb 4-4: device descriptor read/64, error -71
Jan 24 08:44:11 linux klogd: usb 4-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 14
Jan 24 08:44:12 linux klogd: usb 4-4: device not accepting address 14, error -71

cc'ing Danny, maybe he has some clever idea.
Comment 3 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2006-01-26 00:32:58 UTC
What kernel version is this?
Can you provide the output of 'hwinfo'?

Can you try the kernel-of-the-day?

Comment 5 Alex Loes 2006-01-30 09:30:24 UTC
Kernel is (uname -a reports:)
Linux linux 2.6.16-rc1-git3-4-default #1 Tue Jan 24 16:43:20 UTC 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

My testing system is now 10.1 beta2

hwinfo is too big to post here, so it is the attachment.

How can I try a kernel-of-the-day??

I installed now the Beta3, but USB still doesn't work.

Comment 7 Alex Loes 2006-02-07 07:52:11 UTC
lsusb as root shows simmply nothing attached.
Comment 8 Timo Hoenig 2006-02-07 08:04:05 UTC
Do you still see the errors as in the initial bug report?
Comment 9 Alex Loes 2006-02-07 08:15:52 UTC
They changed a little bit:

Feb 7 10:12:34 linux klogd: usb 4-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
Feb 7 10:12:35 linux klogd: usb 4-4: device descriptor read/64, error -71
Feb 7 10:12:35 linux klogd: usb 4-4: device descriptor read/64, error -71
Feb 7 10:12:35 linux klogd: usb 4-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
Feb 7 10:12:35 linux klogd: usb 4-4: device descriptor read/64, error -71
Feb 7 10:12:35 linux klogd: usb 4-4: device descriptor read/64, error -71
Feb 7 10:12:36 linux klogd: usb 4-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
Feb 7 10:12:36 linux klogd: usb 4-4: device not accepting address 8, error -71
Feb 7 10:12:36 linux klogd: usb 4-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 9
Feb 7 10:12:37 linux klogd: usb 4-4: device not accepting address 9, error -71

Comment 10 Timo Hoenig 2006-02-07 08:30:20 UTC
Looks quite the same. I'm not sure whether there were changes with regard to your problem but it might help Greg if you would give it a try with a fresh kernel.

Have a look at:

   ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/mantel/next/i386/HEAD/

Grab the kernel of your choice (e.g. kernel-default.i586.rpm) and install it using:

   $ rpm -i kernel-default.i586.rpm

Reboot and try again. Please report if the bug remains.

Moving to Beta3.
Comment 11 Alex Loes 2006-02-07 15:09:18 UTC
I installed the kernel-default.i586.rpm.
lsusb still shows nothing connected. The Kernel messages are:
Feb 7 17:06:40 linux klogd: usb 4-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6
Feb 7 17:06:40 linux klogd: usb 4-4: device descriptor read/64, error -71
Feb 7 17:06:40 linux klogd: usb 4-4: device descriptor read/64, error -71
Feb 7 17:06:40 linux klogd: usb 4-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
Feb 7 17:06:40 linux klogd: usb 4-4: device descriptor read/64, error -71
Feb 7 17:06:41 linux klogd: usb 4-4: device descriptor read/64, error -71
Feb 7 17:06:41 linux klogd: usb 4-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8
Feb 7 17:06:41 linux klogd: usb 4-4: device not accepting address 8, error -71
Feb 7 17:06:41 linux klogd: usb 4-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 9
Feb 7 17:06:42 linux klogd: usb 4-4: device not accepting address 9, error -71

the kernel is now (uname -a): Linux linux 2.6.16-rc2-git2-20060206180157-default #1 Mon Feb 6 18:01:57 UTC 2006 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
Comment 12 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2006-02-07 16:47:11 UTC
Can you try the following:
  echo "1" > /sys/module/usbcore/paramaters/old_scheme_first

and then plugging the device back in?
Comment 13 Alex Loes 2006-02-08 07:38:10 UTC
No difference. The kernel still shows the errors.
Comment 14 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2006-02-11 07:07:07 UTC

Feel free to add yourself to that bug if you wish.
Comment 16 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2006-03-02 00:20:08 UTC
Can you try the Beta6 release and let me know if the kernel there fixes
this issue or not?
Comment 17 Greg Kroah-Hartman 2006-04-12 16:30:14 UTC
Am closing due to inactivity. If after trying out the latest kernel we provide,
