Bugzilla – Bug 146893
"Network Mode" text confusing
Last modified: 2006-11-08 15:34:47 UTC
Hi, During initial configuration, yast shows a screen where you can configure network manager. The options are User Controller Interfaces via NetworkManagerApplet (Disable) Tradditional Method without NetworkManager Applet (Enable) It not clear exactly what each option does, especailly to someone new to suse linux. I would sugest something like NetowrkManager is (enabled) (User controlled interfaces) Network Manager is (disabled) (traditional method) or User Controller Interfaces via NetworkManagerApplet (Network manager enabled) Tradditional Method without NetworkManager Applet (Netowork Manager disabled)
I'm not sure if this gives any more information... isn't there a descriptive help text? If not, maby it should be added here with some clues for a newbie what NetworkManager is all about? Jiri: Please comment about it.
It may not give more information, but the logic about what is enabled and disabled is clearer IMO. Yes, I'd hope the help text said what network manger is about, but it is not imidiatly obvious when network manager is enabled, and when it is disabled. Maybe it's more obvious in german, and it's loosing something in the translation.

Suggestion (improved) from the dupe bug I filed: Now using traditional method (Switch to Network Manager) Now using Network Manager (Switch to traditional method)
Can't it be done with a radio button? It would be much clearer: ( ) Traditional method (*) Network Manager Applet
Yes, at the moment, the wording is very confusing--but we have to stick with it for the box because we already started with translating the manuals. Yes, using radio buttons would be the best. But we must give up on name dropping. Both, "Traditional method" and "Network Manager Applet" is something the user does not want to take into consideration. The user simply wants to select things such as "Single User Machine with temporary Internet Access", "Server System with permanent Networking", "Mobile Machine", etc.

It is too late again. The revision of admin guide for SLES is already done and translations are in the works. Please resolve it as "LATER".
Reassigning to the new maintainer of yast2-network.
In 10.2, this part of installation proposal has slightly changed. If you click on Network Mode header, you get a dialog with two radio buttons where you can select between ifup and Network Manager method. This dialog also contains help text what each method is good for. See also bug #203817. However, you can still switch between enabled/disabled NetworkManager by clicking on that link. I consider this as fixed. Please reopen if the fix is not sufficient for you.
