as discussed off-line, lirc is of limited use without the kernel modules as esp lirc_serial is quite popular for cheap self made receivers. The kernel modules of version 0.8.0 work with minor modification and could be shipped as kernel module package. Therefore I'd like to upgrade lirc to 0.8.0.
