Description Danny Al-Gaaf 2006-02-02 18:29:38 UTC
I installed SUSE 10.1 Beta3 on a IBM T21 and if the 'Hardware-Konfiguration' dialog started in YaST it need many time (in this time nothing happend) and at the end it display a dialog: "Externes VGA wird von diesem Notebook nicht unterstützt." .

This is a really useless information (in a blocking dialog). It's for me complete unneeded and IMO also wrong, because you can add a external VGA device to this machine (also if you maybe can't configure the device). Btw. if this need such a long time we don't need this. IMO this should first checked if you try to configure your graphic cards and not before or: don't display the blocking dialog and add a info to the main dialog under the section graphic cards.

Sounds like a hardare detection/configuration issue. :-)

This isn't a useless information it tells you that you cannot use
the external VGA with the selected driver because it's not supported.
If you think it make sense to plug in something do that but the message
makes sense

The time for detection includes everything at that point and depends on
the hardware. Useless information is to tell us something about "many time"
which is IMHO wrong because I think you meant "long time" what is a long
time in your opinion ?

The idea to add a flag at the end of the proposal is good but I was
requested to show a popup dialog with the message you already saw
I'm sorry but I'm wondering what you think we should do here, it's
feature freeze it's text freeze ... it's done at that point
Comment 3 Danny Al-Gaaf 2006-02-02 19:50:44 UTC
Yes it needed a long time ... I didn't measured the time, but this needed more than 1 minute or above.

Btw. What I hate is the fact that this dialog block the rest of the hardware config dialog and you have nothing from this dialog. It should not block the rest of the detection. If you start the installation and go out of the room and come back you see the dialog , click o.k. and the you can go again because yast start the rest of detect hardware? Really annoying for the user!

Btw. This is a info you can display in the dialog under the releated section (There is no change in the text needed, so textfreeze is not releated). This info is useless because this tell me something what at this moment is complete uninteresting (and the user can't change anything here). This is as if you display a dialog and say: "There is no TV card, you can't configure the card".

If there is no way to remove this dialog: make the dialog non blocking or continue the rest of hardware detection in the background.
