Description Raphael Schillings 2006-02-02 18:39:02 UTC
I have a laptop Compaq Armada 1500c with sound on board, soundblastercompatible (sb16). 160MB. German (new-)installation.
After the installation the configuration with alsaconf failt (alsa tells me: all would be right. A round lie! No testsound, nothing).
After this I tried to configure the card with yast. The soundmodul doesn't found the card automatically, however by probing. If you want to edit the card, the modul crashs. Without any messages and any success.
The same problem as in 10.0. In several forums are people with the same problem at 10.0, but no solutions.
With 9.3 the sound card works fine. With 10.x not (10.0 and 10.1).

I also had the same problem with my Onboard sound card.

After much frustration I deactivated this and bought another one
(Ensoniq Creative Sound Blaster AudioPCI128) => Still problems:
1) Yast recognizes the sound card, but complains not being able to insert the kernel module "snd-ens1371"
y2log and output of "hwinfo --sound" attached (ID #72963 and #72964)
2) Configuration with alsaconf works, but there is no sound then and kmix reports no sound card
3) Inserting the sound module manually with modprobe works,
lsmod then reports many related snd modules have been also loaded.
But there is still no sound.

Many other people also have problems like this since SuSE-10.0:

Comment 8 Stefan Quandt 2006-03-15 10:36:11 UTC
I'm still running a SuSE-10.0 system (with kernel 2.6.13-15.7-default, alsa-1.0.10-0.pm.0, kde-3.5.1), so behaviour on SuSE-10.1 may differ.

Anyhow the problem seems to be much the same in 10.0 and 10.1.

Did you try more recent betas like Beta10?

... in 10.1Beta8 it yet not fixed (beta10? I never saw...). The stable 10.0 also without sound...
In a little while I wanna test it with RC2

It seems to be a duplicate of bug #202086, non-PCI sound devices were handled incorrectly. Please, try 10.2 Alpha4 when it's ready. Reopen if happens again.
