On my test system (Shuttle SK41G, Matrox G450, 19' TFT), I cannot switch back
to the vesa text consoles (vga=791) after running X, while starting in runlevel 3 does fine (text console wise). After running kdm, X comes up fine,
but when switching back, the monitor just note, that there's no input signal.
