If the NetworkManager isn't activated, the knetworkmanager occupies a systray slot, but doesn't draw any icon. One can quit the thing, but it gets started again with the next session.

this is ok as this is the only way to control your network. What is not ok is that it always starts, no matter if you use NM or not
