Bugzilla – Bug 149421
screen not detected on Inspiron 500m
Last modified: 2006-03-15 00:34:01 UTC
When I boot from CD 1 the screen is not detected correctly on my Inspiron 500m. I can not select 1024x768 for the screen resolution, only 800x600, vesa and textmode are available. However if I add vga=0x305 at the bootprompt I get the correct resolution. This was the same in SL 10.0 already.
Please attach `hwinfo --monitor' as well as the yast logfiles.

Created attachment 67325 [details] Yast2 log files Here are the wanted files, I hope they can help.
I assume the VESA BIOS of your system couldn't be accessed via linuxrc.
That's basically bug 144742 comment 21. Please attach the log of 'hwinfo --vbe --log=xxx'.

Thanks. I don't see any reason why it shouldn't offer 1024x768. You're sure it is not there?
I just tried again. Boot from CD 1 gives me only three choices text mode, vesa and 800x600 :-( How can I help to track this down?
What's the vga option it uses when you select 800x600?
The used option is vga=0x303 Another message I observed immediately before switching to GUI mode is: Found a Linux console terminal on /dev/console (100 columns x 37 lines) Please supply a config file. This sounds like a kind of problem report but it might be totally unrelated.
Some additional information from installing beta4: - the problem is still there, no 1024x768 resolution available after boot - but Yast does detect it! When I manually configure the bootloader I get the 1024x768 in the drop-down box as an option.
Yes, I know. That's exactly what puzzles me.
I've looked at the code again and can't find any obvious reason it leaves out 1024x768 in the boot loader but lists it in hwinfo. Sorry, there's nothing I can do at this point without having such a machine for testing.
Never mind, I know how to work around this, so no big deal for me. Thanks for looking in it.
