The animated boot animation keeps running on console even if xdm/gdm/kdm is already running and shown.

michael, so is this the line 

trigger "isdown" quit

that's not trigging the stop? Can you give some pointers on what changed there?

No, "isdown" is sent by /etc/init.d/halt. But yes, this trigger is missing in the config as well. It makes the splash program quit immediately as the script tries to unmount the filesystems right after the call.

I was talking about the missing
  trigger "rlreached 5" toverbose
i.e. switch to verbose mode at the end of the startup.

You may also want to add back the 'trigger "rlchange 0" tosilent' and
'trigger "rlchange 6" tosilent' triggers, so that the system switches back to silent mode on shutdown.
