Bugzilla – Bug 152344
Xgl server displays the wrong colors
Last modified: 2006-03-01 16:53:38 UTC
I've a fresh install of beta 4 and tried the xgl server. After isntallation, downloaded and patched the NVIDIA driver as directed in http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html The new setup works. Then I installed the packages listed in http://en.opensuse.org/Xgl Edited displaymanager and set DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER and DISPLAYMANAGER_XGL_OPTS as described in the web page. Then started the xserver with: startx twm On X server start, the display background is black and most window decorations are black. Some windows show some of the colors correctly, but the display is mostly useless, since almost everything is balk.

Created attachment 69412 [details] XGL server log This is the X server log for the XGL server. The graphics car is: nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] rev 178
Tried again the xgl server. Some applications display almost ok: gedit, gnome-terminal, gimp. Others display completely black: xterm, mozilla.
Started compiz from the gnome-terminal. After starting, the background turns blue and all the windows turn black. I can see the wobbly effect when moving a window, the cube rotation works, F12 works, resize works. gnome-window-decoration does not seem to have any affect, hard to tell since all windows are black. Killing compiz, returns color to my gnome-terminal, there are a bunch of error messages. They are attached. I'd suggest some kind of dubugging flag for compiz and gnome-window-decoration.

A GeForce2 MX is most probably not capable enough to run Xgl. Though I admit that Xgl should bail out if a necessary extension is not available. What version of Xgl are you using? The errors from compiz sound familiar, there has been an update to support GeForce 4 and lower cards lately. Make sure that you have at least xgl-cvs_060216-1 installed. Please report the outcome. Due to the age of this card (you're lucky it's still supported by the binary drivers, a plain GeForce2 isn't any more) this is a minor issue, though.
I updated to xgl-cvs_060216-2 and tried again. This time it worked. The keyboard-mouse combo to rotate the cube does not work all the time. If the gnome-panel and nautilus have been loaded, then it works. The load on the CPU when using the fancy features is around 50-95%. I've not had time to try to do a lot of testing. I've beta5 and will try to re-install.
Good news! Performance on this chip is supposed to be pretty low. It seems that the CPU is busy waiting for the graphics chip to respond. I do not understand that keyboard/mouse combo doesn't work always, I've never seen that. If this persists and can be easily reproduced, please open another bug report. Will be investigated slowly only, though. Closing this as FIXED.
