Bugzilla – Bug 154404
Gaim "Authorization Request" dialog needs ICQ search feature
Last modified: 2010-11-30 16:11:21 UTC
Some IM services, like ICQ, do not have intuitive names. Also, many people use obscure handles in Instant Messenger. This makes it difficult to know whether an Authorization Request is valid or not. I will attach graphic of an ICQ request for an example. ICQ has a simple URL for checking profiles online: http://www.icq.com/whitepages/about_me.php?uin=152202004 It turns out that the request in this case was from some guy in Japan seeking hot gay chat with me. Since I already have a relationship with a lonely septagenarian man in Nagasaki, I declined. But the point is that I had to manually search ICQ, which makes it difficult to assert the identity of the requestor.) So, ideally, there would be a "Who is this?" button that brokers the link for the user. (And if the button were backed by a simple configuration file that could be adapted when the URL's change, that would be a great way to fix the issue.) Finally, I realize that we have far more important issues before release, so please take this as a suggestion/request for the future.

Gaim itself has a search dialog. The problem is, that the dialog is not offered frm this window (or even called automatically). Is this fixed in Gaim2? If yes, can we backport it?
Doubtful, gaim2 has changed a lot.
Verified this with throwaway accounts and MSN protocol in Pidgin 2.3.1, and it looks like there have been no relevant changes since then. Upstreamed the bug to http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/4715 - marking LATER.
