Description Brian Patten 2006-03-05 16:18:52 UTC
Dear Suse 10.1 Dev. Team,
I downloaed and installed Suse 10.1 Beta 6, following instructions that CD1-3 are only needed for basic KDE/Gnome install. I went to software management and installed ndiswrapper. I went to a root konsole and performed ndiswrapper -i <name>.inf. It installed and I typed ndiswrapper -l to verify, hardware is present and driver installed. I perform modprobe ndiswrapper and it fails. It states "ndiswrapper not found". I searched for a ndiswrapper.ko and no luck. I came across a "loadndisdriver" but have no clue what it does.
Please fix and address for future releases.
Thank you! =)

Have a look at the ndiswrapper-* packages ;-)

I've gone into Yast2 and searched for "ndiswrapper-*" and nothing comes up. BTW, asterisk doesnt work in Yast2 as a wildcard. If i just type in "ndiswrapper" it just comes up with the one package.
After looking at the "related" bug reported the other person referenced Kernel-* which I searched for "kernel-" and I got all the different kernels.
What does that have to do with ndiswrapper? Ndiswrapper package should install the kernel module, not the actual kernel sources. Suse 10.0 was as simple as install ndiswrapper package and do what I did above. 10.1 seems to be difficult. I simply followed what it says online, download CD1-3 for a basic KDE/GNOME installation.

Could you clarify what you're having me search for because it seems that it does not exist?
Thanks.

There are the following packages:
ndiswrapper - command line tools
km_ndiswrapper - kernel modules

If you cannot find these packages on your installation medium, try an online-repository. However, for 10.0 these packages came on the pressed DVD only.

Some packages cannot be added to the CDs (and even to the DVD) for space and/or license reasons, but the packages are all available via FTP.

I did search for km_ndiswrapper and it did not appear on any of the 10.1 cds 1-5. However, In 10.0 CDs 1-5, I was able to install ndiswrapper without having to install km_ndiswrapper and I downloaded the CDs from a Suse mirror. I did not purchase them at all from the store (pressed DVD).

I know that I was able to install just the ndiswrapper and get online because the computer I got online via ndiswrapper version 10.0 does not have an ethernet card at all. I know I'm not crazy. It must have been that the kernel modules were already compiled into the 10.0 kernel (2.6.13-15.8) but are not compiled into the 10.1 RC5 kernel.

Will the module be compiled into the 10.1 released kernel?
