Welcome Background Image of Language Selection
Last modified: 2006-03-09 18:07:24 UTC
The background image of the language selection dialog looks in some way misplaced. Looks like the KDE Welcome screen from Suse 9.1 ? In SuSE 10.0 I thought that the background mode of the dialog was set to opaque by accident and some remainings of the boot screen are shining through. Is this intended this way ? Sorry I'm not a graphic designer but I think just a plane background will look far better. The existing graphics doesn't match with the good looking design of the boot screen etc ...

The whole dialog box has a broken layout, the language list not using up all (or even a sensibly large) amount of space available. Bad initial impression, hence I think this deserves more than minor.
This is intentional. Again, this is the result of neverending usability discussions. You really don't want to see the alternatives that were seriously proposed. And yes, this IS the old KDM background. The idea is to greet the user in multiple languages because the user's native language is not known at this point. We consider that approach a lot more friendly than only an English welcome text - which according to long experience I know would be misused as a place for advertisements for all kinds of other things. If somebody comes up with a better image that serves the same purpose (and works in that environment), he is welcome. But so far this is the best we have.
