inside KDE I sudo root and then type "init 3" and get a never-ending bootsplash instead of a console prompt.

This sounds like bug 150340 :-(  (was marked as fixed 2006-02-21 - maybe you should reopen it...)

Yes, it's the same problem which seems to have reappeared.
