Description Antoon Tolboom 2006-03-15 12:47:21 UTC
Installing SUSE-Linux-10.1-beta6-i386 on my Dell Dimension with AGP Nvidia Riva TNT2 Model 62 (32MB) video card and HP D2840 Ergo 1280 monitor I have encountered the following problem:
The suggested 1280x1024 resolution resulted in the top 20% of the Language selection screen being displayed and the rest is black. And thus the language list and the Next button are not visible.
All other resolutions failed except for the VESA mode.
In the VESA mode one of the last screens is Hardware Configuration (HC).
The HC screen is displayed as described in the 1280x1024 mode.
The following lines are visible:
      Graphics card: Nvidia RIVA TNT2...............1600x1200
      Monitor: Hewlett-Packard D2840............................
      Test the Configuration.
The rest of the screen is black.
The only possibility now is to select <Test the Configuration>.
The test screen of SAX2 is started and the entire screen is displayed.
After leaving SAX2 the entire HC screen is displayed and thus the Next button can be selected.
With Beta4 I did not have this problem.

Does booting with `hwprobe=-gfxcard' or `hwprobe=-monitor' help anything? Please attach the output of these commands here. Also check if the listed resolutions and frequencies are correct.

Comment 3 Antoon Tolboom 2006-03-16 20:29:58 UTC
Booting with `hwprobe=-gfxcard' did not change the behaviour.
The resolution 1600x1200 are used in the OS when it is running perfectly.
This resolution is also used in SUSE 10.0.

Booting with 'hwprobe=-monitor ended in acompleet failure.
The HC screen showed up with:
   ERROR No proposal

Please attach the output of these commands here.
I presume you mean the file /var/log/boot.msg (see above comment
