Prior to Suse 10.1 this known functionality was known possible. Simply by selecting Local Directory under the add source menu. 

Note: Migrated from Suse 10.0 Retail to 10.1 Retail

Whem attempted Yast2 responds:
Unable to create installation source ? 

The only work around so far is by using rug command line interface via 
rug service-add /home/edward/suse/samba/updates/

Which at this point allows to utilitize the mounted directory.
