Bugzilla – Bug 179014
Can't add samba user from Samba control center
Last modified: 2009-10-27 08:12:17 UTC
Hi, As YaST Samba configuration tool can't create Samba users I used to create them with smbpasswd command. ButI wan't to use Samba configuration tool from KDE control Center (Personnal Setings ->Internet & Network ->Samba). When I'm going to Users tab I can add an Unix User to the Samba User List. I apply or click OK but /etc/samba/smbpasswd file is not modified, my Samba user is not created. So if I come back to the Samba configuration my user is not listed in "Samba Users". Can you repair it please ?
This bug was reported reported over 2 months ago and it still exists. I know that the severity level is a little bit to high for it, since you can add a user with smbpasswd, HOWEVER, it would be nice if somebody could enable this funny "apply" button (it's grey when you try to click on it - disabled). Thank you!
the kde control center part will be removed I guess. Are you saying you can't create users with yast either? If so, then I suggest you file a bug report against yast - and that one would be major indeed.
Has a new bug report created for this? What needs to be done?
You say, that we can create Samba users with Yast: just tell me where, I could not find any such feature in yast.
I said a new bug should be created if it's not possible with yast
Even in OpenSuse 11.1, the users can't be added by the control center (though the GUI still seams to support the feature), and there is not possibility to add users and groups to Samba in the YAST modules. The only way is still via console commands or WebMin. But I think that, adding samba users should be possible via a YAST dialog, and the control center should no longer display tabs that do not work, creating a lot of confusion.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=178187 for the KDE part, RESOLVED UPSTREAM. Reassigning to Yast to have a look at the yast part of the bugreport.

yast2-samba-server must be installed and configured so the Samba User plugins can be used. Ralf, what needs to be done to activate UsersPluginSamba? There's init_samba_sid function that must succeed, what needs to be configured?
(In reply to comment #10) > Ralf, what needs to be done to activate UsersPluginSamba? There's > init_samba_sid function that must succeed, what needs to be configured? Samba must be configured to use LDAP and the "sambaDomain" Object must be initialized. I.e. the domain's SID must be available in the LDAP server. The "sambaDomain" object is usually created upon first startup of smbd or if smbpasswd/pdbedit is called, IIRC. (And that is usually done by yast2-samba-server)
See previous comment: could you test it?
Any news?
Hey, could you please test the proposed solutions?
No response.
