Description Stefan Dirsch 2006-09-20 12:55:36 UTC
The good news here is that we already have a solution for openSUSE 10.1 (after SLE10 has been released). Due to the common (kernel) code base you can use the packages for SLE10 hosted by ATI/NVIDIA also for openSUSE 10.1.

And now the bad one. Since ATI/NVIDIA is concerned about needing to support drivers, which are hosted by them, it is *very* unlikely, that they will host
RPMs for non-SLE product, because of the big driver matrix

 (n * openSUSE) X (o * driver_version) X (p * kernel_release)

Therefore I suggest to host the RPMs for openSUSE > 10.1 on another server.
packman might be a candidate for this.

I've set this to critical, since the question, if we'll provide ATI/NVIDIA driver packages also for openSUSE > 10.1 comes quite often on the openSUSE mailing lists.

It's nice to see we have these packages available for internal use, but it's even better to see a solution for our customers. SCNR ...
Comment 3 Andreas Jaeger 2006-09-20 15:30:30 UTC
SUSE/Novell will not release those packages at all.
Comment 4 Pascal Bleser 2006-09-20 21:20:14 UTC
Could you guys at least provide "support" (read: "help") for writing and building the KMP ?

If hosted e.g. at Packman, it would be totally unsupported and "use at your own risk" anyway. But it would be really helpful if you could provide us with some help to do the KMP (as I presume you know how the folks at nVidia do it).
Comment 5 Stefan Dirsch 2006-09-20 21:39:09 UTC
I don't see a problem in providing the source RPM, since the drivers themselves are marked as Nosource anyway.

I think the obvious place for hosting would be the same as for 10.1 - namely Nvidia and ATi ftp respectively..

Is it to be understood that ATi and Nvidia refuse to host the KMPs for 10.2?
Comment 11 Dominique Leuenberger 2006-09-21 09:26:26 UTC
I had some contact with nVidia a few days ago for this matter. And they are not willing to host the packages if they're not coming from Novell direct. Probably there is some scaryness about abuse behind.

What would be about the Packman and/or Guru repos? Could this be an alternative?
I guess Novell would not like somebody building them in the BS :-)
Comment 12 Martin Schlander 2006-09-21 09:56:59 UTC
#11
Well, If the guys in Nürnberg were to build the packages they would be coming directly from Novell - the exact same thing as the current situation with the SLED KMPs.

So if coming directly from Novell is the only issue - then all we need is for SUSE to take on the responsibility of building them and sending them to the vendors.

Of course I don't expect the vendors to host KMPs some n00b built.
Comment 13 Dominique Leuenberger 2006-09-21 10:00:25 UTC
As stated in #3 this is quiet unlikely to happen.

Also some discussions on maillingsts pointed this out very clearly.
Comment 14 Martin Schlander 2006-09-21 10:08:18 UTC
Maybe it's just me. But to me "releasing KMPs" and "building KMPs" are two different matters. Not entirely sure which AJ meant.

In my scenario - much like the current SLE scenario - SUSE would do the building and the vendors would do the releasing.

Yes, I think so.

With which NVIDIA person did you talk?

> I guess Novell would not like somebody building them in the BS :-)
Please, no, no, never do this! Unfortunately it's not possible to build only
the Source RPMs. Otherwise I've done this a long time ago.

My contact at nVidia was Lonni Friedman
Comment 17 Stefan Dirsch 2006-09-21 10:50:13 UTC
Ok. He has also a bugzilla account here at Novell.
Comment 19 Stefan Dirsch 2006-11-01 23:09:13 UTC
Lonni, could you comment on the question if NVIDIA would be willing to host NVIDIA driver RPMs for openSUSE >= 10.2 built by Novell?
Comment 20 Lonni Friedman 2006-11-01 23:28:53 UTC
Yes, NVIDIA could host them assuming that Novell is providing them. Will they need to be signed in any way by NVIDIA, or just hosted?
Comment 21 Stefan Dirsch 2006-11-01 23:50:59 UTC
Thanks! I'll ask. These need to be hosted in a YUM repository as it is already handled for SLE10 (see ftp://download.nvidia.com/novell).
Comment 22 Lonni Friedman 2006-11-01 23:54:23 UTC
We sign the SLE10 driver RPMs, so I'll assume that the process will be similar for 10.2. Feel free to email me directly, as I don't think we need to hash out details or logistics in this bug (unless you'd prefer to). Thanks.
Comment 23 Martin Schlander 2006-11-02 00:17:02 UTC
Sounds great.

One thing though. Let's not forget about that other huge vendor, ATi.

True, most die hard Linux users have Nvidia, but many n00bs switching over have ATi, and on top of that the ATi driver is a bit tricky to install and set up. So having KMPs for ATi hosted is just as important, and potentially a very important selling point for openSUSE.. as if we need one the way 10.2 is shaping up.

I guess you need to open a separate bug, this is about Nvidia.. ;)

Not at all. See Bug Summary.
Comment 26 Stefan Dirsch 2006-11-06 15:08:07 UTC
I'm now maintaining the sources for the RPMs (excluding the installer!) via the openSUSE buildservice.

Projects:
X11:Drivers:Video:fglrx  --> ati-fglrx
X11:Drivers:Video:nvidia --> nvidia-gfx

http://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=X11%3ADrivers%3AVideo%3Afglrx
http://build.opensuse.org/project/show?project=X11%3ADrivers%3AVideo%3Afglrx

So anyone, who is interested in building RPMs (not only ATI/NVIDIA), can build and possibly host these.
Comment 27 Stefan Dirsch 2006-12-04 17:53:30 UTC
Finally NVIDIA driver RPMs for openSUSE 10.2 are available

  http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/10.2

My updated HOWTO should be available shortly.

ATI fglrx packages for openSUSE 10.2 are finally available from the ATI
site.

My updated HOWTO with instructions how to installl the driver will also be available shortly.

Comment 29 Stefan Dirsch 2007-02-13 17:13:12 UTC
Use

YaST -> Software -> Change installation Source -> Add

  Protocol: http
  Server Name: : www2.ati.com
  Directory on Server: suse/10.2

to add the ATI http server as additional installation source.
Now use

YaST -> Software -> Install and Delete Software

to install the ATI/fglrx driver. Select the following packages:

  x11-video-fglrxG01
  ati-fglrxG01-kmp-<kernel-flavor>

<kernel-flavor> depends on your installed kernel. Check with
"uname -r" for installed default/smp/bigsmp kernel. Use "sax2 -r"
for X.Org configuration.
