Bugzilla – Bug 214265
YAST2 printer module crashes rebuilding the driver database
Last modified: 2007-03-22 07:06:48 UTC
Trying to re-enable my printer (HP device usually managed by hplip but currently not working for unknown reasons), I noticed that the printer module of YAST2 is crashing while rebuilding the printer database/list of installed drivers: linux:~ # yast2 printer /sbin/yast2: line 267: 30827 Abgebrochen $ybindir/y2base $module "$@" "$SELECTED_GUI" "$Y2_GEOMETRY" $Y2QT_ARGS The ncurses interface is crashing at this point, too. Versions (x86_64): yast2-printer-2.14.3-1 yast2-2.14.6-2 yast2-core-2.14.2-4 hplip-1.6.10-3 cups-(client/libs)-1.2.4-5 cups-drivers-1.2.4-2 cups-backends-1.0-28 libgimpprint-4.2.7-84 manufacturer-PPDs-0.5-29 foomatic-filters-3.0.2-34 (gutenprint is not installed) Last entries of y2log: 2006-10-22 10:00:42 <1> linux(31856) [YCP] Printerdb.ycp:340 Checking foomatic database 2006-10-22 10:00:42 <1> linux(31856) [YCP] Printerdb.ycp:343 Database changed 2006-10-22 10:00:42 <1> linux(31856) [agent-ppd] PPDdb.cc(createdbThread):419 CreateDbThread started 2006-10-22 10:00:49 <1> linux(31856) [agent-ppd] PPDdb.cc(loadPrebuiltDatabase):1439 Database file parsed correctly by YCP parser 2006-10-22 10:00:50 <1> linux(31856) [agent-ppd] PPDdb.cc(loadPrebuiltDatabase):1670 Database contents is OK
Maybe this is related with bug #210913.

This bug seems to be back in 10.2 Beta1. Has the exact same symptoms as originally described.
John, please read comment 3: > fixed in yast2-printer-2.14.4 Beta1 ships with yast2-printer-2.14.3, as you can easily verify, and that's why you are experiencing this, but it is already fixed: For Beta2. Please also read http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs which documents that it is already known that this happens in Beta1, and please don't reopen this report again.

Just one thing: if you are updating from beta1 or previous versions, and you still cannot configure your printer, delete the file /var/lib/YaST2/ppd_db.ycp before starting the printer configuration.
rpm will do that in beta2

I have got the same problem with yast2-printer version 2.14.15-3 in SuSE Linux 10.2-DVD-i386. Is there a new patch available?
Martin, this bug (segfault) produces another one (hanging - #229231) That one is fixed in version yast2-printer-2.14.17 As workarround delete file /var/lib/YaST2/ppd_db.ycp
