Bugzilla – Bug 274706
The option flush is not allowed for uid=1000
Last modified: 2007-08-04 09:27:22 UTC
When trying to open devices like iPod and USB key I get the above error. My external disk attached via USB works fine though
Please attach screen shot showing this message.
Ok, here they are

I confirm this bug. When I connect my Sony Ericsson K800i openSUSE informs me about 2 new devices (phone + card inside) and asks what I want to do. I check opening device in new window and then I get this error. I attach my dmesg with hope this will be helpfully. P.S. When I try to open device as root (kdesu konqueror sysinfo:/) I get this same error. The only difference is that I see "The option 'flush' is not allowed for uid=0".

Same problem here with an usb stick. The interesting parts from .xsession-errors: kded: ERROR: mount failed for /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_4627_5E2F: org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.InvalidMountOption - The option 'flush' is not allowed for uid=1000 kded: ERROR: mounting /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/volume_uuid_4627_5E2F returned The option 'flush' is not allowed for uid=1000

I confirm this but for Alpha4, tested with several different USB memory keys. For me, it is a showstopper, since Linux with a broken USB memory subsystem is useless to me. But in respect of even more serious bugs, I only raise the priority only to high.
Summary should read: The option flush is not allowed for uid=* Even root can't mount FAT-formatted USB-Sticks. Guess hal-0.5.8_git200704021230 is causing this. Last changelog: * Fr Mai 11 2007 - dkukawka@suse.de - added new patches: - hal-fix-SetPowerSave.diff: fix SetPowerSave() return type - hal-update-libparted_check.diff: allow also libparted 1.8.7 - hal-fix-acpi_on_battery_discharging.diff: fix broken ACPI batteries from b.n.c #258755 - hal-fix-acpiIBM_brightness_up.diff: disable forward brightness up key event since this now also work via input-layer - hal-allow_uid_gid_on_hfs_v2.diff: allow gid=/uid= for removable media volumes with hfs filesystems, see b.n.c#232235 - hal-fix-mount_options_vfat.diff: allow -o flush for vfat see b.n.c #230737
could you change this line in /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/20-storage-methods.fdi from: <append key="volume.mount.valid_options" type="strlist">flush=</append> to <append key="volume.mount.valid_options" type="strlist">flush</append>
Great! Works with this change. THX
Factory's hal-0.5.8_git200704021230-23 (Build Date: Sun May 27 23:36:19 2007) still shows the "="-character in /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/20-storage-methods.fdi. Please update the package. Thanks.
(In reply to comment #14) > Factory's hal-0.5.8_git200704021230-23 (Build Date: Sun May 27 23:36:19 2007) And? Did someone say this bug get fixed? Remember this is factory, you know the solution and there was no new release.
This is factory, indeed. So you can fix a bug when the solution is known, put it in the buildservice and hopefully it will appear in factory automagically. BTW: 20-storage-methods.fdi in gitweb.freedesktop.org doesn't show the "=" and there's no diff that it was there since the flush option was committed. But you are the maintainer, not me. I will wait. :-)
Didn't read #279084 before writing comment #16. So I think the fix is on the way. Thanks.

The automagic hasn't happened yet in hal-0.5.8_git200704021230-32. It's no problem waiting, just as long as you're sure the magic is still processing and has not malfunctioned.
Just to see it on top of the list :-) *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 284924 ***
This is not the duplicate ... the new bug is a duplicate of this one

Hello. I dont want to write a new bug, but mounting still doesn't work.External hard disk attached via usb works fine, but usb key and cd/dvd-rom doesn't work. Btw, i have installed openSUSE 10.3 aplha5, 1 KDE cd install. Regards, Rasto

as time goes by ...
Danny, I just tested your suggested fix and this works. I'm sitting ~2.5 metres away from you if you want to check it out.
Danny tells me he is waiting for a general hal update to fix this and this is blocked on policykit, but it is going to happen soon

I've installed aplha 6 and mounting of usb keys doesn't work.Still the same problem.
And mounting of cd/dvd rom doesn't work too.So i can't try for example "Online Update Configuration" via YaST, because i get error "No package source defined".This message i got during installation too.So i can't add cd/dvd rom as installation source. 1 KDE cd installation medium, Aplha6 Regards
I don't want to appear impatient - I know this is factory, alpha, I paid nothing for it, and all that ;) ... But this (serious) bug lingers for quite some time now...
Inserting the flash stick now gives the error A security policy in place prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient, see message bus configuration file (rejected message had interface "org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume" member "Mount" error name "(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.Hal") :-( who sent what to whom and who didn't let who see what? I confirm that CD/DVDs are not mounted anymore, with the same confusing error message appearing.
Now that the solution of the problem celebrates its second monthersary, Danny agreed to fix this on friday the one way or the other (still hoping he sees a new hal version for alpha7)
I tried alpha6 from dvd install medium today and cd/dvd mounting worked. How is that possible that mounting of cd/dvd rom from 1KDE cd doesn't work, but from dvd install works? Strange.
that's a different bug. File one - this bug is about USB and fat file systems.
