Description Michael Eschweiler 2007-07-02 21:22:46 UTC
The setup for the x-server writes an xorg.conf-file with the
driver 'intel'. This driver doesn't work with the Acer Travelmate 661 (onboard-intel-graphic). I had to change the driver to i810 manually in order to make the x-server work.

Comment 1 Stefan Dirsch 2007-07-02 22:02:06 UTC
Using the "intel" driver for 855 is intentional. Please give me more details than "doesn't work".
Comment 2 Michael Eschweiler 2007-07-02 22:56:25 UTC
There isn't much to say: The x-server starts but that's nearly all: The screen remains black - only a slightly clearer (dark grey) right part of the screen which seems to flicker a little bit.Every time I tried this I had go to the console (Ctrl-ALT-F2) or stop the x-server (Ctrl-ALT-Backspace).
Comment 3 Stefan Dirsch 2007-07-03 03:28:11 UTC
Ok. Could you at least attach the intel based /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Please have a look at the two attachments (as I there was no reaction to my last comment at bug # 230123 I didn't know which kind of information to provide)
Comment 7 Stefan Dirsch 2007-07-03 22:04:49 UTC
This is a TFT monitor, correct? Could you try again with 1400X1050@60HZ" instead of the 75 Hz? Thanks.
Comment 8 Michael Eschweiler 2007-07-03 22:42:58 UTC
Yes, it's a TFT monitor. I tried with 1400x1050@60HZ but there is no significant change. Now sometimes at the left side shows up very shortly a white stripe - maybe the distorted content of the screen.
Comment 9 Stefan Dirsch 2007-07-04 02:43:21 UTC
I wonder if this problem is related to the used resolution. Any more success with a standard resolution like 1024x768?
Comment 10 Michael Eschweiler 2007-07-04 19:43:13 UTC
I tried what you proposed but without success, the screen remained dark with a slight flicker. I did the following:
In the section monitor I changed
ModelName from 1400X1050@75HZ to 1024X768@75HZ (in a second trial I also tried 1024X768@60HZ)
As the section Modes didn't contain Modelines for 1068x768 I added them manually from another xorg.conf file of an older installation (10.2) on this laptop. The section screen I left untouched.Hope this was alright.I even tried all this once more without the 855resolution...

Comment 11 Stefan Dirsch 2007-07-04 20:23:09 UTC
Not sure, what you did exactly. I suggest to edit only the screen section and change all the 1400x1050 entries with 1024x768 entries. There should modelines for this standard resolution be predefined in the Xserver modeline pool. So you don't need to specify one. Attach the new Xorg.0.log afterwards.

Xorg-logfile after setting screen to 1024x768

With the screen set to 1024x768 there is no change - the screen remains black. I tried with 60 and 75 Hz - no difference

xorg.conf with section screen set to 1024x768

I hope I did the intented changess in xorg.conf.
Comment 14 Stefan Dirsch 2007-07-05 04:23:03 UTC
Your changes are ok. Probably due to autodetection the driver still uses 1400x1050 as resolution. :-(
Comment 15 Michael Eschweiler 2007-07-05 19:48:41 UTC
Is there something left what I can do? And, does exist the possibility that this problem will be fixed with a newer driver?
Comment 16 Stefan Dirsch 2007-07-05 20:13:31 UTC
No, currently I'm afraid you can't help. :-(
Comment 17 Stefan Dirsch 2007-07-05 20:43:01 UTC
Probabyl non-standard resolution on 855 are still a problem for the new "intel" driver. :-(
Comment 18 Stefan Dirsch 2007-07-06 18:01:52 UTC
Stefan, do we have an Intel 855 based notebook with a non-standard native resolution, preferrably 1400x1050?
Comment 19 Stefan Behlert 2007-07-10 14:33:32 UTC
Took a while, but the only one with 852/855 chipset has an 1280x800, no one has 1400x1050. I could give you that one if it helps.
Comment 20 Stefan Dirsch 2007-07-10 14:38:07 UTC
Yes, I think it would help me.
Comment 22 Stefan Dirsch 2007-07-13 08:36:17 UTC
Unfortunately I can't reproduce that issue on the Yakumo 1280x800 laptop. I'm attaching the config and logfile for this machine (might be helpful for later investigations), but for now I'm afraid we need to switch to i810 driver for your laptop.

done.

If you're interested in getting the new intel driver working with your laptop ASAP, it would be helpful to open a bugreport for this issue on

  bugs.freedesktop.org (product xorg, component Driver/intel)

and put me into Cc (sndirsch@suse.de), so the upstream intel developers (Intel itself!) can have a look at this issue.
Comment 26 Matthias Hopf 2007-07-13 13:10:01 UTC
Another note: you probably want to announce this issue on the xorg-devel mailing list - bugs in the X.org bugzilla database tend to be ignored otherwise :-(

I'll do this. It seems, that this is not only a problem of the 855 chipset: Yesterday I installed OSS 10.2 on Fujitsu Siemens PC with an integrated c845 chipset connected to a 1680x1050 TFT-screen. After the installation I did a complete update. When I restarted the machine it ended up at a black screen, totally frozen, with no way to a console. Only after setting the driver in xorg.conf from "intel" to "i810" it worked.

Could you give some details where to find this mailing list - I didn't find one with this name...
Comment 29 Stefan Dirsch 2007-07-14 06:47:26 UTC
We would need a seperate bugreport for the 845 issue. You need to register first before you can post anything to the xorg ML.
