hwinfo --disk

Because of another bug with DMRaid (reported elsewhere) requiring raid45 and raid456 module not providing this, I temporarily gave up attempting to configure fake-raid DMraid 5 and configured my 4 drive SATA set as a MD Raid 5 software raid set sucessfully and have loaded it with almost 1 TB of data repeatedly to test for speed and reliability. My goal is to still make the fake-raid function, but for now, this has to suffice. When I press the 'My Computer' icon on my desktop, I get a very nice display showing my system resources (attachment). However, my MD0 software raid is not attached. If I use the kcmdf desktop applet to show disk usage, it does show the raid array correctly (also in the attached screenshot). Attached also is my hwinfo --disk. The motherboard is an ASUS M2NPV-VM with hardware fake-raid support turned on in bios but not recognized by SUSE (though DMRaid sees it fine were it not for the above mentioned raid45 bug).

Screenshot showing problem

Screenshot clearly showing NO raid array in the SYSINFO but just as clearly showing it in the disk information window.

That is because it only shows media it can mount and unmount through HAL. It shouldn't be too hard to merge the list with the list of mount points. Your raid shouldn't be displayed by media:/ either
Comment 3 Richard Creighton 2007-07-12 11:06:51 UTC
Thank you for your response Stephan. If what you are saying is true,
then it is not a bug in the classic sense, but it is a design deficiency
of significance. This system has a small 120G drive to boot the
system from and 1.1TB for data and programs, none of which is accounted
for in the display of 'My Computer'. This means that one has to use
other means to determine the state of their machine (and impress
visiting Windoze junkies). The raid device and LVMs are mounted at
boot time and are listed in /etc/fstab just as any other physical hard
drive is and the raid device shows up when you display 'mount' in
terminal. SYSINFO should NOT depend on HAL or any other mechanism
that excludes important and significant portions of system resources.
In fact, in this case, almost 99% of the available disk space resource
is unaccounted for in the 'My Computer' / Sysinfo display. To me, this
is a bug in program design if not one caused by a programming error
causing a system to malfunction. This program is not doing what it
advertises to be doing because it is not providing all of the pertinent
system information accurately in this case, apparently by erroneous
design. As systems become larger and raid and LVMs become
increasingly common, it makes sense that all system resources should be
treated equally by reporting mechanisms such as SYSINFO especially when
'lower' or lesser programs can do it.

Today in our Windoze centric society, I really enjoy being able to
show the 'unwashed masses' that one does not need M$ to do *anything*,
but they aren't impressed when I have to drop to a command line
interface to find out how much system resources I have left or bring up
2 or three other programs to do what 1 very nice and impressive program
*should* have shown. They *used* to be impressed on my other machines
that didn't have a RAID or LVM but guffawed me when they gleefully
pointed out that my new system that had a 1.1TB storage system couldn't
display it.

Dunno why I got this report.

Comment 6 Seb Tomasini 2008-06-23 04:19:48 UTC
This problem remains (ie. is not rectified) in openSuse 11.0.

Is the issue related just to HAL or another way in which KDE scans mounted partitions?
Comment 7 Richard Creighton 2008-06-23 09:05:38 UTC
All of the devices in /etc/fstab are shown EXCEPT /dev/md0 even NFS mounts that failed (even though the sizes, etc don't show, the devices are listed). Apparantly, FSTAB and MTAB are not consulted by whatever does the scanning though.
Comment 8 Seb Tomasini 2008-06-24 04:34:12 UTC
Is there anything blocking a fix to this? I know a bunch of users who are hacked off that sysinfo and media:/ don't recognise their dmraid partitions.
Comment 9 Dominik Platz 2008-06-28 08:33:34 UTC
changed to 11.0 final, because this enhancement isn't implemented yet.

Summary:
only HAL block-devices are displayed in sysinfo:/
but also raid configuration(s) should be displayed in sysinfo:/
(and same enhancement for media:/, too)

RAID 1 is showing for me in openSUSE 11.1 with KDE4's sysinfo:/ however the devices are not labeled in a human friendly manner. I suggest closing this bug but noting that sysinfo:/ isn't friendly in displaying RAID information.
Comment 11 Dean Hilkewich 2009-05-14 16:15:00 UTC
It may work for Raid 1, but it does not for Raid 0 or 5. Reopening.
Comment 12 Forgotten User vXTZVacoSi 2009-05-15 14:50:48 UTC
According to latest reports bumping to 11.2 and KDE4 Workspace, but I don't think this qualifies for online update.
Comment 13 Forgotten User vXTZVacoSi 2009-05-15 17:05:49 UTC
Marking assigned, issue clear, but needs developer which currently have more pressing issues at hand.
