Bugzilla – Bug 304669
[opensuse-updater][kde] show the install summary in the updater
Last modified: 2008-06-04 08:55:47 UTC
I had kernel-default installed and opensuse updater showed an update for iwlwifi. The text below the update-list just stated something about wifi, so I installed it. However, without any notification kernel-bigsmp was installed. Since installing a new kernel should always warn the user before actually doing so, opensuse updater should do so too.

Can zypper provide this information using xml?
(In reply to comment #3 from Thomas Göttlicher) > Can zypper provide this information using xml? Yes, and not only that. Zypper could issue a warning also in the regular output on such occasion (although that may not be needed since the user sees a kernel package to be installed in the install summary (hmm... but isn't this the case also in the updater?)). In any case i would rather regard this as a feature request, not a bug.

You are right. > In any case i would rather regard this as a feature request, not a bug. I'll change this request to enhancement.
I filed an internal feature request #302536: Warn upon installing a new kernel. Resolving the bug as LATER until its implemented/rejected.
reopening for 11.0
The feature has been rejected: please check the installation summary before proceeding with update. Closing as WONTFIX.
If I use opensuseupdater it just shows "kernel" for the update. So how should I find out?
What information do you need? Versions of the current kernel and the new one?
BTW, IMO, what is missing here is that the updater/zypper should install the kernel in parallel to the current one by default, but that is another feature.
It's about flavours. I cannot see the kernel-flavour in opensuseupdater, just the patch's description and the version. The patch itself is called "kernel". Did the person who rejected the feature try to determine the kernel-flavour of a patch in opensuseupdater? In YOU I can see the different package-names in the right-pane, but this was explicitly about opensuseupdater.
This is another in a long list of anti-social behaviors like Bug 342703 that the updater program exhibits. This should NOT be resolved as a WONTFIX, it should be addressed as a real issue, especially where a kernel replacement is involved.
What was reject was the notification of the kernel update. OK, so let me rename this request to 'show the install summary in the updater' as there is a difference between the list of available updates and the actual list of to-be-installed/upgraded/removed packages. This is reasonable. We can discuss how to do it. Thomas, reassigning to you again (although you will probably need the xml output of zypper :O).
Due to bug 364875 this feature cannot be implemented.
