Description Boyd Timothy 2007-08-28 19:41:09 UTC
Since these are actions (verbs), they should be listed as:

"Log Out"
"Shut Down"

Just a little something I learned from one of our technical writers. Other popular operating systems use two separate words as well.
Comment 1 Magnus Boman 2007-09-17 22:29:37 UTC
Please don't "fix" this... :-) Leave it alone...
Comment 2 James Krehl 2007-09-18 16:51:48 UTC
I agree with comment #1, marking WONTFIX.
Comment 3 Boyd Timothy 2007-09-18 17:05:29 UTC
Please reconsider fixing this for openSUSE 11. Windows and OS X both use two separate words for these actions. The terms "Shutdown" and "Logout" are more like nouns and not actions. Splitting them into two separate words turns them into verbs/actions.

Additionally, libssui, which had extensive research/discussions on the wording, uses two separate words for these terms. Better to stay consistent.
Comment 4 James Krehl 2007-09-18 17:36:14 UTC
I maintain that I do not think this is a bug. I agree with the need for consistency, but I would advocate that libssui be changed. Is there a record of these discussions anywhere so I can see the rationale behind the change from the original? At any rate, please allow me to downgrade this to minor.

Calvin, do you have access to these records?
Comment 6 Calvin Gaisford 2007-09-18 20:29:13 UTC
I don't have a transcript of the discussion. It went along the lines that logout and shutdown are not verbs, they are nouns and technical terms (and not really words) that refer to the process. The mockup was shown with slab using the same wording as libssui which is "Log Out" and "Shut Down".

The end justification was very similar to what you can find on wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logout
Comment 7 Calvin Gaisford 2007-09-18 20:44:48 UTC
Ironically, I went back and looked at libssui terms and it appears it uses "Log Out" and "Shutdown". Not even consistent in the same UI, but I support making the change to "Log Out" and "Shut Down".

Does this have any impact on this bug? I have pointet to this as a possible cause of that bug.
Comment 10 JP Rosevear 2008-03-06 01:00:41 UTC
We should use Log Out and Shut Down to be consistent with the rest of the gnome ui.
