Description craig gardner 2007-09-19 17:51:05 UTC
X was working fine while running 10.3 Beta3. But I updated to RC1 and now I can't start X or sax2.

It seems to fail trying to load the ATI driver.

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Version Identifier:8.41.7
(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Release Identifier: UNSUPPORTED-8.413.1
(II) ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Build Date: Sep 7 2007 22:35:20
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

When I first updated from Beta3, I noticed that I didn't have ati-fglrxG01-kmp installed. I was also missing x11-video-fglrxG01.rpm. So installed them, but it didn't seem to help. I get the same errors.

Attaching the logs....

Comment 3 Stefan Dirsch 2007-09-19 17:58:40 UTC
Support for FireGL/FireMV has been dropped from 8.41/8.42 driver release. The support will likely be back in 8.43. Nevertheless I decided to update to 8.41 for openSUSE 10.3 (only), since the support for new graphics chip familiy (HD 2xxxx) is much more important than the support for FireGL/FireMV cards for older chip families. Need to close this as LATER.

Thanks for quick and concise response to this, Stefan. I've installed 8.40 and at least my laptop is functional again.

I'll look forward to 8.43.

Bear in mind that this driver version didn't just drop support for FireGL and FireMV cards. This version is not supported at all for non-HD cards and is known to be completely broken on AGP x**** cards.

Since there are undoubtedly a lot more r300, r400, and r500 users than there are r600 users, doesn't it make sense to use 8.40 instead of 8.41 and have the r600 users have to install 8.41 manually?

Comment 13 Stefan Dirsch 2007-10-08 14:30:03 UTC
I was not aware that the support for non-HD cards is officially been regarded as completely broken. The decision to take 8.41 has been made with the background that with openSUSE 10.3 Radeon-HD card support is more important than the temporarily dropped FireGL/FireMV support. There are currently no plans to revert this decision.

In your case it seems even to be a configuration issue (specified Modeline which confuses the driver and results in a segfault), so this would have happended with 8.40 as well.
Comment 14 Adam Kirchhoff 2007-10-08 14:40:46 UTC
Well, on that particular machine it was a configuration issue. I do have two machines, one with an AGP x1300 one with an AGP x700, that won't work at all with 8.41. I just haven't finished installing them yet :-) If you go to AMD's website and download the latest driver for any *non* HD card, you will either get 8.40 (for radeons) or 8.35 (for FireGL and FireMV).

Is there a technical reason you don't want to revert to 8.40 for non Radeon-HD cards?

Comment 15 Stefan Dirsch 2007-10-08 15:03:56 UTC
Sure there is a reason. We finally want to support Radeon-HD cards. Let's see if there's already an improvement with 8.42 ...
Comment 16 Adam Kirchhoff 2007-10-08 15:29:19 UTC
Well, I can undertand wanting to support radeon HD cards, but not at the expense of r300, r400, and r500 cards :-)

But, as you say, let's see what happens with 8.42. Do you have any insider knowledge about when 8.42 will be released? :-)
Comment 17 Stefan Dirsch 2007-10-08 15:38:21 UTC
Well, I don't think the situation is that bad for R300/R400/R500 as you want to let me know (since you are affected I can understand this though). At least this is the impression I got from the fglrx driver beta list and testing the driver on different cards myself.

Even if I would have the insider information I would not be allowed to talk to you about it. :-)
Comment 18 Adam Kirchhoff 2007-10-08 16:00:15 UTC
I don't think I'm trying to make the situation sound bad. It's certainly true that 8.41 works fine for many users. I just find it strange that users are given a driver for their video card when the release notes for the driver even say to use 8.40 instead of 8.41.

In any case, it's certainly not a big deal, and I've already updated the ATI page on the wiki to reflect the problem, suggesting that r300-r500 uses may want to use the

8.42.3 RPMs are now available via http://www2.suse.com/suse/10.3

Comment 24 Stefan Dirsch 2007-11-14 20:46:07 UTC
Unfortunately 8.43 won't be a stable release (no FireGL/FireMV support). Hopefully 8.44 (maybe still this year) will be.
