Hplip not installed upon yast2->hw->printer configuration for HP devices
Last modified: 2008-05-22 12:05:18 UTC
I have hp deskjet f380 (<=> f300 series). When first time selecting yast2->hardware->printer to configure the printer, yast downloads and installs some packages (gutenprint, hplip-hpijs), but not "hplip". This causes the printer/scanner doesn't work at all. So I need to install the additional "hplip" package. Then in printer list I need to "edit" the printer and change the "connection" to "hplip backend". Then the printing works. Note that a normal user will never figure him/herself these additional steps. This applies also to other hp devices which are usually supposed to work with hplip. Please change it so hplip is set automatically upon printer setup for HP devices.

So only printing will work (and hplip is thus unecessary). > Please change it so hplip is set automatically upon printer setup for HP > devices. That makes this bug depend on bug #309933 and bug #184798
Quoting bug#332750 comment#4 : Considering these printers/scanners are probably among the most used in Linux, I increase severity a bit :-)

It seems some (maybe most) HP devices work only with hplip, not mentioning all-in-one devices with scanner which surely require hplip. So I consider mandatory installing hplip upon firts printer detection/configuration with yast for any printer/scanner from HP. . > > That makes this bug depend on bug #309933 and bug #184798 > Yes and no. The first one is some problems with parallel port if I understand. The second one won't apply if hplip is installed upon printer config. If it's installed, some more ho devices are listed in yast printer list and the printing works OK.
