It seems some applications are packed with large icons. When you install these applications, on the desktop the icons are too big (128×128px). Granted that the user can change the icon manually but Gnome should resize these large icons so that all icons have the same size set by default.

/usr/share/pixmaps/seamonkey.png is indeed 128x128.  My acroread launcher seems to be using a sane icon, but on my machine it's evidently using an icon theme provided by the kdebase3 package.

Then again, this bug is suggesting to resize pathologically large icons, so the focus is presumably on nautilus.

FWIW, I've confirmed that konqueror resizes such pathologically large icons.

There's already an upstream bug on this issue:

I think it's best to handle this upstream.  We'll eventually get any fix that goes upstream.
