X11 fails to run with NVIDIA proprietary driver nvidia-gfx01-kmp-default-169.07-2.6.22.13.0-3-1-1 and x11-videeo-nvidiaG01 169.07-1.1 (both dated decemer 2007)

 fails to load X11 subsystem on system start
 startx produces error "NVIDIA  - Failed to load NVIDIA Kernel module".
