Bugzilla – Bug 366459
During clean installation from alpha2 DVD WLAN (ipw3945) not configurable.
Last modified: 2008-03-13 19:21:29 UTC
During a clean install from alpha2 DVD both network cards are detected properly (e100, ipw3945) selecting the ipw3945 shows a remark: "Unable to configure the network card because the kernel device is not present" After installation hwinfo shows: hwinfo --network 37: None 00.0: 1070a WLAN [Created at net.124] Unique ID: 36u+.QXn1l67RSa1 Parent ID: JNkJ.vmyQlf1bSk6 SysFS ID: /class/net/wlan0_rename_re SysFS Device Link: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.0/0000:01:00.0 Hardware Class: network interface Model: "WLAN network interface" Driver: "iwl3945" Driver Modules: "iwl3945" Device File: wlan0_rename_re HW Address: 00:13:02:18:12:ac Link detected: no Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #7 (WLAN controller) 38: None 01.0: 10701 Ethernet [Created at net.124] Unique ID: L2Ua.ndpeucax6V1 Parent ID: JNkJ.vmyQlf1bSk6 SysFS ID: /class/net/eth1 SysFS Device Link: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1c.0/0000:01:00.0 Hardware Class: network interface Model: "Ethernet network interface" Driver: "iwl3945" Driver Modules: "iwl3945" Device File: eth1 HW Address: 00:13:02:18:12:ac Link detected: yes Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #7 (WLAN controller) 39: None 00.0: 10701 Ethernet [Created at net.124] Unique ID: usDW.ndpeucax6V1 Parent ID: rBUF.GBRhHvE6U06 SysFS ID: /class/net/eth0 SysFS Device Link: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1e.0/0000:07:08.0 Hardware Class: network interface Model: "Ethernet network interface" Driver: "e100" Driver Modules: "e100" Device File: eth0 HW Address: 00:16:36:34:25:66 Link detected: yes Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown Attached to: #6 (Ethernet controller) 40: None 00.0: 10700 Loopback [Created at net.124] Unique ID: ZsBS.GQNx7L4uPNA SysFS ID: /class/net/lo Hardware Class: network interface Model: "Loopback network interface" Device File: lo Link detected: yes Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown

NEEDINFO won't go away so trying a dummy comment here.
It seems to be duplicate of bug #354141 Look there and try workaround, please
Actually in the meantime I found that yast2 lan has a tab "Hardware" in "Network Card Setup" that lets you change the device name. Changing it here to WLAN0 solves the issue. And, yes, it is the same issue as bug #354141
