Bugzilla – Bug 371997
installation fails to detect hardware
Last modified: 2008-05-16 07:30:58 UTC
I thought this is only related to virtualbox - as I did not have this problem with qemu and vmware, but my laptop has the same problem, so it's real: NET: Registered protocol family 10 lo: Disabled Privacy Extensions BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at f9146dbc IP: [<c01e0d58>] strnlen+0x9/0x19 *pde = 36bb4067 *pte = 00000000 Oops: 0000 [#1] SMP last sysfs file: /sys/devices/platform/pcspkr/modalias Modules linked in: parport_pc parport ipv6 squashfs nls_utf8 e1000e iwl4965 mac80211 cfg80211 sbp2 ohci1394 ieee1394 usb_storage uhci_hcd usbhid hid ff_memless ehci_hcd usbcore pcmcia firmware_class yenta_socket rsrc_nonstatic pcmcia_core pata_acpi ata_piix libata arc4 ecb crypto_blkcipher fan thermal processor loop nfs nfs_acl lockd sunrpc nls_iso8859_1 nls_cp437 af_packet nvram edd sg st sd_mod sr_mod scsi_mod ide_disk ide_cd_mod cdrom ide_core rtc_cmos rtc_core rtc_lib [last unloaded: parport] Pid: 3418, comm: y2base Tainted: G N (2.6.25-rc5-git3-6-default #1) EIP: 0060:[<c01e0d58>] EFLAGS: 00010297 CPU: 1 EIP is at strnlen+0x9/0x19 EAX: f9146dbc EBX: f7b7602e ECX: f9146dbc EDX: fffffffe ESI: f7e31efc EDI: f9146dbc EBP: f7e31e84 ESP: f7e31e84 DS: 007b ES: 007b FS: 00d8 GS: 0033 SS: 0068 Process y2base (pid: 3418, ti=f7e30000 task=f799e0a0 task.ti=f7e30000) Stack: f7e31eb8 c01e03e7 c0379605 00000fde f7b76022 00000010 f7b77000 00000000 ffffffff ffffffff f7b76022 f7b00180 f7b00180 f7e31ecc c018dab5 f7e31edc 00000000 f7a4c2a0 f7e31f0c c0129a49 f7b00180 c03795f1 00000000 c037f049 Call Trace: [<c01e03e7>] vsnprintf+0x286/0x41f [<c018dab5>] seq_printf+0x25/0x45 [<c0129a49>] r_show+0x5d/0x67 [<c018df1d>] seq_read+0x195/0x25f [<c01a666f>] proc_reg_read+0x5a/0x6e [<c0177d8f>] vfs_read+0x89/0x133 [<c0177ed2>] sys_read+0x3b/0x60 [<c0105b62>] syscall_call+0x7/0xb [<b7b68771>] 0xb7b68771 ======================= Code: 05 bf 01 00 00 00 4f 89 f8 5f 5d c3 55 85 c9 89 e5 57 89 c7 89 d0 74 05 f2 ae 75 01 4f 89 f8 5f 5d c3 55 89 c1 89 e5 89 c8 eb 06 <80> 38 00 74 07 40 4a 83 fa ff 75 f4 29 c8 5d c3 55 89 e5 57 56 EIP: [<c01e0d58>] strnlen+0x9/0x19 SS:ESP 0068:f7e31e84 ---[ end trace 6364ac4e3a28a0e8 ]---
hwinfo hangs on "open parallel" at this
suggested work around: hwprobe=-parallel,-misc.par

Sorry folks, I seem to be missing the clou here: comment #2 how and where is this to be used ?
When you first boot-up the installation CD, you are at the menu that allows you to boot from disk, installation, etc. So use the arrow keys to select installation then start typing hwprobe=-parallel,-misc.par You will see it appear below, then you can just hit enter and it should work out for you.
Thanks, Josh, back in business :-)

Hi! This error occours only on my Hardwareplattform when I have the Parallel-Port disabled in the BIOS and when I use the 32-bit Alpha-3 Version of OpenSuSE 11.0 on a 64-bit AMD. If I ENABLE the Parallel-Port the Installation runs to its end without the OOps occouring. Whe you do a graphical installation the machine hangup stop while checking for the Harddisk-Controllers. I did several physical installation runs, no one in an VM-environment. The workaround with hwprobe=... is no solution for the Golden Master Relase. Thx Josef
When using the text installation, the detection works on my Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo, while doing the installation in GUI did give the error.
I have this bug on my MacBook.

same problem occurs when installing inside Virtualbox 1.5.2 on top of 10.3 running on my Fujitusu Siemens Lifebook. Suggested workaround works!

I have the same problem. I tried to install in my laptop Toshiba Satellite M60, before in a real partition and then in a virtual machine with VirtualBox, but the the installation fails when detect the hard disk controller. In the laptop is installed OpenSUSE 10.3.

I hit the same snag on a Dell Latitude D520. The System Analysis stayed at the 'probing hard disk controllers' stage and on one logger screen the message ' (EE) FBDEV(0): FBIOBLANK: invalid argument' kept repeating. The HD controller is a SATA IDE (ICH7 family) using the ata_piix driver if that is any help... Suggested workaround works here too and install moves on smoothly! Great new installer by the way! You guys are rocking into another great new release! Cheers, Wj

This is probably the fix: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=4ed919014eb2b591eb8fdd4dd00226a65faddef4
Greg, can you please pull that into Factory before we get more duplicates with beta1 ;(
Now checked in, it was in cvs already, but not pushed into Factory. That has been rectified.
