Bugzilla – Bug 390411
upgrade of NVIDIA based system results in horrible X performance
Last modified: 2008-05-14 20:51:36 UTC
my system has NVIDIA GeForce7300LE graphics card. On 10.3, i was using "nvidia" accelerated driver. When upgrading to 11.0beta2, the accelerated driver was lost and (apparently correctly) replaced with "nv". From that point on, X performance is catastrophic - one second lag when dragging windows, slow scrolling and screen updates (to the point of unusability in firefox - update of fullscreen window takes as long as 2s). There is even a noticeable lag in xdm login input box (gdm and kdm are fine, though) In GNOME, compiz starts successfully (without accelerated driver), but after that the screen no longer updates. I'm not sure if this is a bug in compiz or a configuration problem. See also bug 386863 Reconfiguring X with SaX2 doesn't help. For comparison, fresh beta2 installation on the same system behaves as expected - no perceivable slowness with "nv" driver. (i still have the broken installation available, so i can provide basically any logs and info you want ;e) )
nv driver does not provide *any* 3D support, so still using compiz doesn't make much sense to me. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 386863 ***
a) compiz shouldn't even start in such configuration, that is IMO a bug, and b) that's not the point anyway. i'm complaining about general performance problem -without- compiz. compiz is only mentioned as a sidenote, to perhaps help find the real problem.
I think that Xgl is still enabled and slows down your system considerably. This should be fixed after the next NVIDIA driver RPM update for openSUSE 10.3. See Bug #386863, comment #7. Additionally compiz is started even before the Xsession. See Bug #386863, comment #8. I suggest to give Beta3 a try (released today/tomorrow) to verify that the issue has been fixed and not to reopen before. Thanks.
