JJ: Make software.opensuse.org translation friendly
Last modified: 2009-10-21 10:32:48 UTC
Now we have nice http://software.opensuse.org/ portal, and it is friendly page for new user, but this is limited only to people who speak english, i think we should make portal more translations friendly. Software portal should provide simple .po file for translation (it should be in translation repository on i18n.opensuse.org), because it is simple for translators. Software portal can detect user's language from his HTTP HEADERs, but here should be a possibility to change language to specified language, maybe by flag in header like packman website have or by roller box like openSUSE wiki have.
I would like this too.
I agree, too. This seems a good idea :-)
This would be very nice! Right now it seems like openSUSE would only be available in English language.
there are basically two parts of software.o.o 1) The ISO media download page. Yes, we should make this translateable via some mechanism. 2) The software search behind /search/ URL This is intended to be obsoleted by the new software portal. Thomas, does the current code from the software portal support translations or is this listed as wanted feature somewhere ?
(In reply to comment #4 from Adrian Schroeter) > there are basically two parts of software.o.o > > 1) The ISO media download page. > Yes, we should make this translateable via some mechanism. I don't think so, then you (or developers) should keep i18n in mind for this portal as well. > Thomas, does the current code from the software portal support translations or > is this listed as wanted feature somewhere ? >
Software portal: The used web framework (apache wicket) has i18n support, and I already see german and french translations in svn.
As Thomas wrote, the Apache Wicket framework provides good I18N support out-of-the-box. Not with .po files but with (IMO even simpler) .properties files. Those are simple plain-text files with the format "word=translation". Here's a short excerpt: application.title=Portail de logiciels openSUSE logged.in.as=Connecté en tant que ${username} sign.in=Connexion sign.out=Déconnexion
any news? any progress?
any news ?
So what´s the state? Can we expect any progress here?
i18n with builtin rails methods is quite easy: http://guides.rubyonrails.org/i18n.html but does not use standard gettext .pot files. To use .pot files (which might be the better solution because translators are used to the tools eg kbabel) we can use Ruby-GetText: http://www.yotabanana.com/hiki/ruby-gettext-howto-rails.html Marking as JuniorJob, the code for software.o.o can be checked out with: svn co https://forgesvn1.novell.com/svn/opensuse/trunk/buildservice/src/software/
I found the software-opensuse-org.pot in the lcn svn and I started translate it. I have found the following in message #41: "Download " If this represent the header of the page: "Download openSUSE 11.1" message please add to translation as "Download %s", because in Hungarian I should translate it to "%s letöltése". thanks
There are various glitches still. E.g. all wiki links are currently not marked for translation.
Requested fix was quick. Thanks! translation update done.
Hi, I thought the following: - when it was chosen to download an ISO, the download icon was transformed into a CD / DVD - If it was a torrent, the download icon turned into an image of a torrent - If it were a net install, the download icon would change to a globe (something resembling the Internet) Understand? Another thing is the edge of the image. Is better without. Cheers!
while I can't guarantee we will have the new design ready for 11.2, the new design is translation friendly and you can change the selected language in patching the URL - http://software.opensuse.org/developer2/es -> http://software.opensuse.org/developer2/en
