Bugzilla – Bug 401762
nvidia driver from http://opensuse-community.org/nvidia.ymp for different kernel
Last modified: 2008-06-19 20:15:20 UTC
the problem that driver module is not loading during startup still exists with todays GM - the driver is compiled against different kernel version- the worse problem is also that Sax is not able to return to nv driver when You have nvidia driver installed and unexperienced user can be locked in text mode. What helps is running sax2 -r 0=nv
Can you reproduce this issue when using the installation instructions on http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html#1 http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/nvidia-installer-HOWTO.html#2 instead? Please attach /etc/X11/xorg.conf, /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output of 'hwinfo --gfxcard'. Most likely your hardware is not supported by the driver (RPM).
yes i followed the HOWTO and when You do it it's reproducible- what I'm saying is that NVIDIA can be easily installed when You compile by yourself. The RPM contains nvidia module for different kernel version than the one installed in Opensuse 11.0 by default. IT has nothing to do with my nvidia card. Now I'm using NVIDIA driver when I installed kernel-source RPM and compiled the NVIDIA by myself. linuxatemki:/home/polrus # hwinfo --gfxcard 23: PCI(AGP) 100.0: 0300 VGA compatible controller (VGA) [Created at pci.310] UDI: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_10de_221 Unique ID: VCu0.wcYHBsGv8V5 Parent ID: vSkL.ITQqGs0XM26 SysFS ID: /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.0 SysFS BusID: 0000:01:00.0 Hardware Class: graphics card Model: "nVidia GeForce 6200 (0x0221)" Vendor: pci 0x10de "nVidia Corporation" Device: pci 0x0221 "GeForce 6200 (0x0221)" SubVendor: pci 0x1043 "ASUSTeK Computer Inc." > yes i followed the HOWTO and when You do it it's reproducible- I don't think so. I bet that no package is autoselected and you selected them manuallly. "If no additional packages are autoselected, your card is not supported by the driver (RPMs) at the moment." >what I'm saying >is that NVIDIA can be easily installed when You compile by yourself. I'm sorry, but your conclusiong are wrong. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 357366 ***
