Bugzilla – Bug 433939
Not obvious how to turn on or auto-configure a new display from the tray icon or capplet
Last modified: 2016-04-15 09:13:11 UTC
I hot plug a monitor; nothing happens - do we not get an event we can trigger firing up the display-properties thingy ? Anyhow - I then click on the display applet - which shows me only having one display plugged in: which is odd, since when I run gnome-display-properties it clearly shows that there are two ;-) What's the story there ? photo attached.

Hot plug is covered by bug 388161.

Unfortunately we don't get notification when a new display is plugged in. VGA can't do it; only some drivers and DVI can do it. As for not showing the new monitor in the tray icon, we need a "Detect displays" command there that will do the equivalent of "xrandr --auto" (i.e. turn on any connected outputs and put them in a sensible position). Right now the tray icon only shows outputs which are turned on (in software, not in hardware). From your screenshot of gnome-display-properties, your second display is turned off (see the darker-colored "Unknown" box in the dialog). You need to click on that box (notice that it will say "Off" in the resolution combo), and then select a resolution to turn it on. Summary: the usability sucks here, but it is easy to fix :)

Submitted for GNOME:Factory; this should become part of openSUSE:Factory soon. You need gnome-desktop, gnome-settings-daemon, and gnome-control-center. gnome-desktop: * Fri Jan 09 2009 federico@novell.com - Added gnome-desktop-randr-gerror.diff. This adds GError reporting to the GnomeRR API, which in turn lets gnome-settings-daemon and gnome-control-center provide good error messages when something fails in multihead configuration. - Removed gnome-desktop-randr-cloned-outputs.diff, as it is already part of the patch above. gnome-settings-daemon: * Fri Jan 09 2009 - federico@novell.com - Added gnome-settings-daemon-randr-gerror.diff. This makes the RANDR plugin for gnome-settings-daemon process GError arguments from the GnomeRR API, so that it can give good error reporting. - Removed gnome-settings-daemon-randr-fnf7.diff as it is already contained within the patch above. gnome-control-center: * Fri Jan 09 2009 - federico@novell.com - Added gnome-control-center-randr-gerror.diff. This adds good error reporting when changing the multihead configuration, and fixes these bugs: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=381030 - Fix spacings in the display capplet's dialog, labels, and option grouping. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=450141 - Remove nonfunctioning Help button. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=433939 - Make it more obvious how to turn on a newly-detected monitor that is off. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=551566 - Fix incorrect repainting when resizing the capplet's dialog.
