User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; de; rv:1.9.1.2) Gecko/20090730 SUSE/3.5.2-2.4 Firefox/3.5.2

The xorg.conf generated by SaX2 does not contain vital sections as InputDevice, Monitor, Modes, Files or Module any more. I do not see how SaX2 should suceed to configure an external monitor this way. The graphical surface of SaX2 does not even seem to recognize that a HDMI monitor has been plugged on. Besides this a more elaborate xorg.conf allows it ot be rewritten by hand which may often be necessary or at least desirable.
Neither SaX2 nor SaX2 -r could detect the external monitor.

Reproducible: Always

> xorg.conf.install

This is the xorg.conf from installation - only to be used with the 'x11failsafe' option - not created by sax2 at all. There was a bug in MS6, which created a copy of xorg.conf.install as xorg.conf.

SaX2 is obsolete since openSUSE 11.2 and should only be used as last resort. The driver's monitor detections is much better than the one of SaX2 can ever be.

HORRIBLE !!
The creators of the radeonhd driver currently do not even manage to get around with hardware accelaration. Std. Hw-accelaration('exa') simply does not work for the radeonhd shipped with MS6 (besides many other very nasty errors http://lists.opensuse.org/radeonhd/2009-06/msg00102.html). Do not even think about giving them over the hw detection! There is currently little sense in testing the intermediate results of the freedesktop/radeonhd group. As major development leaps seem to be in progress there I would currently give the radeonhd driver an 'unsupported' status.

The good hw-detection by SaX2 has always been a major advantage of Opensuse towards other distros. Never discard this!!

If you really wanna discard SaX2 then make the installer provide a useful xorg.conf!!!
Comment 6 Elmar Stellnberger 2009-08-28 11:58:14 UTC
I do not see what kind of tool should take the place of SaX2. Command line hacking with xrandr which is currently unsupported? - Oh no !!
It always gives me errors like 'Configuring crtc0 failed' if not at all all screens turn black and no more graphics output is given (not even on the text console).
Comment 7 Elmar Stellnberger 2009-08-28 11:58:31 UTC
is this a joke??
Comment 8 Elmar Stellnberger 2009-08-28 12:03:43 UTC
Perhaps an issue for future releases.
Nonetheless I can not think about the radeonhd driver to develop so far that it could take over hardware detection until September.
Casual users would however still depeer a tool to configure their graphics card manually (although krandrtray may already provide some of the functionality it will never allow the preconfiguration of a monitor which is necessary for desktop usage and can only be achieved by a proper xorg.conf.).
Comment 9 Stefan Dirsch 2009-08-28 13:12:58 UTC
Elmar, could you try to accept that Bugzilla is a bug tracking and not a flame war tool? And attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log with no xorg.conf in place, so we can investigate what the issue is here. Thanks.
Comment 10 Elmar Stellnberger 2009-08-28 14:30:09 UTC
OK, this not a bug of SaX2.
It has been Xorg sometimes crashing on a good xorg.conf (or saying wrong driver).
I will report this upstream.
Comment 11 Elmar Stellnberger 2009-08-28 14:33:11 UTC
Basically the radeonhd group is doing good work and making progress on 3D support. I do not want to say anything against them. I am just worried a bit that things won`t get stable enough before the next OS release.
Comment 12 Elmar Stellnberger 2009-08-28 14:38:22 UTC
... and don`t think about giving up SaX2. It works very well. There is no replacement for it.
It is often not the fault of YaST(or SaX2) if things go wrong.
