Created attachment 345446 [details] Hardware Information (YAST) from Virtual Box 3.1.4 virtual machine It seems problem is not related to graphics adapter or system configuration of my notebook (ASUS M51Ta). I just tried to install OpenSUSE 11.3 MS2 in virtual machine (VirtualBox 3.1.4 hosted in Windows Vista) And I experienced same problem - Live CD boots, I install it to hard disk. But system is not usable, doesn't boot to KDE after reboot. I can only login via command line.
Just tried to install OpenSUSE 11.2 in VirtualBox on same computer, different VM. It works fine, I was able to complete installation to HDD from KDE LiveCD session. Therefor, it seems OpenSUSE 11.3 MS2 has regression comparing to 11.2 I would be happy to help to track it down to package level. Please let me know what kind of additional information is required, if any.
The virtualbox issues could actually be bnc#584085 (VirtualBox kernel module vboxvideo causes oops on X start) In the VM try removing /lib/modules/*/vboxvideo.ko and see if X starts; if it does, that is a duplicate of the above bug and different to this one.
Well, OpenSUSE 11.2 works fine inside VirtualBox 3.1.4 Just extracted from 11.2 system working in VirtualBox with Guest Additions how built-in Xorg.conf looks like: --------------------------------------------------- # X.Org X Server 1.6.5 # Release Date: 2009-10-11 # Build Operating System: openSUSE SUSE LINUX Section "Device" Identifier "Builtin Default vboxvideo Device 0" Driver "vboxvideo" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Builtin Default vboxvideo Screen 0" Device "Builtin Default vboxvideo Device 0" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Builtin Default fbdev Device 0" Driver "fbdev" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Builtin Default fbdev Screen 0" Device "Builtin Default fbdev Device 0" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Builtin Default vesa Device 0" Driver "vesa" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Builtin Default vesa Screen 0" Device "Builtin Default vesa Device 0" EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Builtin Default Layout" Screen "Builtin Default vboxvideo Screen 0" Screen "Builtin Default fbdev Screen 0" Screen "Builtin Default vesa Screen 0" EndSection ------------------------------------------------------------------ Mandriva 2010 uses generated config (X.Org X Server 1.6.5, Kernel 2.6.31.12 ) It is also running in VirtualBox 3.1.4 with Guest Additions ------------------------------------------------------------------ # File generated by XFdrake (rev ) Section "ServerFlags" Option "DontZap" "False" # disable <Ctrl><Alt><BS> (server abort) #DontZoom # disable <Ctrl><Alt><KP_+>/<KP_-> (resolution switching) AllowMouseOpenFail # allows the server to start up even if the mouse does not work EndSection Section "Module" Disable "dri" Load "dbe" # Double-Buffering Extension Load "v4l" # Video for Linux Load "extmod" Load "glx" # 3D layer EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse1" Driver "vboxmouse" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "monitor1" VendorName "Plug'n Play" # TV fullscreen mode or DVD fullscreen output. # 768x576 @ 79 Hz, 50 kHz hsync ModeLine "768x576" 50.00 768 832 846 1000 576 590 595 630 # 768x576 @ 100 Hz, 61.6 kHz hsync ModeLine "768x576" 63.07 768 800 960 1024 576 578 590 616 EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "device1" VendorName "InnoTek Systemberatung GmbH" BoardName "VirtualBox virtual video card" Driver "vboxvideo" Option "DPMS" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "screen1" Device "device1" Monitor "monitor1" EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "layout1" InputDevice "Mouse1" "CorePointer" Screen "screen1" EndSection ----------------------------------------------------- So it seems problem reported in this bug is caused either by auto-config in Xorg in OpenSUSE 11.3, or by Kernel 2.6.33
System doesn't start any mode after installation from KDE Live CD. (build 0447 kde x86-64) I selected "Install now" and proceed with install, it doesn't start after reboot in graphics or text mode System details: See hwinfo from live cd boot Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot from KDE LiveCD 2. Install system using "Install now" 3. Reboot Actual Results: I get black scren after reboot. I tried reboot -> init 3 - failed as well.
Created attachment 346943 [details] hwinfo content -when using live cd
I faced the same problem while installing from the Gnome Live CD (Milestone 3). I have attached YaST logs here. The second part of installation, after reboot proceeds in text mode.
Created attachment 347003 [details] YaST2 logs on installed system
Update to comment 14 I installed the DVD kde (Selected all the groups) from openSUSE-DVD-Build0475-x86_64.iso. The result of the reboot after installation was that the reboot was successful after installation, and the screen looked ok. The system operates as normal.
It looks like after install 11.3M3 from KDE LiveCD YaST (or/and SuSEconfig) can't start to setup freshly installed system. We can use virtual console but nothing more. My gfx card: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 4770 [RV740]
Vadim,Glenn : If I understand correctly installation works for you but installed system won't boot up .. ( and you hit this issue on real hw and also in virtualbox ) just for sure check Milestone 3 - if isn't work for you .. if not, we need messages or Xorg.0.log from system *where boot up fails* so could you please attach /var/log/messages and /var/log/Xorg.0.log files ?
Michal, Installation (to Hard disk drive) DOESN'T work I have tried to insdtall 11.3 MS2 and MS3 on 4 different systems, and it failed on 3! And yes - I retested all those systems with Milestone3. For ASUS M51Ta I have posted /var/log/Xorg.0.log as Comment 8. Note that it is from (working) live session. Wehn I reboot, I just get command prompt. And I can't connect to internet or copy Xorg.0.log to USB flash - at least I don't know how to do it when system doesn't recognize USB stick, and now browser is available. Can you please check other bugs I reported: * KDE Live CD (Build0447) doesn't boot on Acer 6935G, screen corrupted https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=581635 * OpenSUSE 11.3 doesn't install, KDE Live session boots https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=582982 * OpenSUSE 11.3 MS3/KDE Live CD starts up to KDE4 Desktop, than system hangs, no response to mouse or keyboard https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=586157 May be, all those bugs are related to each other (Kernel? Xorg auto-config? video drivers?)
Michal, For bug * KDE Live CD (Build0447) doesn't boot on Acer 6935G, screen corrupted https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=581635 I have uploaded /var/log/Xorg.0.log as Comment 2 to that bug. Direct link: https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=346920 Differences between two systems: ASUS M51Ta - AMD Turion CPU, ATI 3650+ATI 3200 graphics Acer 6935 - Intel CPU, NVIDIA 9600GT graphics Both systems are about 1 year old (12-14 months) For bug * OpenSUSE 11.3 MS3/KDE Live CD starts up to KDE4 Desktop, than system hangs, no response to mouse or keyboard https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=586157 I even could not get OpenSUSE 11.3 MS3 booted. But I loaded Fedora 12, and Xorg.0.log file is provided as attachment I don't think Xorg.0.log file is too much different from OpenSUSE. :) For this system (MSI S271 notebook, AMD CPU, built-in ATI video) I also created Smolt profile: http://www.smolts.org/client/show/pub_4f750c14-1590-481e-9d0a-24584ddc7a7c It is 2 year old, so it's not modern but has resonable configuration.
Created attachment 349659 [details] Xorg.0.log file from the real system where X fails. Here is Xorg.0.log file from the real system (not VirtualBox) where X fails... Originally reported as bug 581635 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=581635
I just installed [kvm virtual machine, 64-bit] OpenSUSE 11.3 Milestone 4 from the Gnome LiveCD and it installs but won't get me any graphics, just a blank screen. Using top on the host machine [OpenSUSE 11.2 64-bit] shows that qemu-kvm is sleeping, and takes little cpu and ram, as if the guest is waiting for something (dbus issue?). I'll keep the VM so I can maybe help somehow.
Created attachment 350828 [details] YaST2 autoconfiguration without X
I tried M4 (i586) and problem still occures. Installation was completed but after reboot X couldn't start. I needed switch to tty1 [Alt+Ctrl+F1] to let YaST2 did autoconfiguration. After the next reboot, system is ready to "normal use". And now X starts without any problem, even 3D accel works fine. Tested on notebook, Acer Aspire 5024 with radoen X700 GPU.
Answer and addition to comment 20 and comment 24: Tried to boot OpenSUSE 11.3 Milestone 4 LiveCD in VMware Server 2.0.2 (hosted in Windows Vista). It seems system reaches Runlevel 5, but screen is blank. So it's similar to experience I have with couple of *real* systems, and similar to installation in KVM Virtual Machine Aioanei Rares did (comment 24). Problems with installation in VirtualBox VM described in bug https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=576681 seems have different cause. I also tried to install OpenSUSE 11.2 KDE Live CD in VMware Server 2.0.2 Both boot-up of LiveCD and installation came smoothly. OpenSUSE 11.2 boots fine after installation, KDE is working. Therefor, 11.3 Milestone4 has problems with installation in VMware, KVM and on some real systems (blank screen after reboot). And it's regression comparing to OpenSUSE 11.2 Probably the most easy way to isolate this problem is to compare latest snapshot of 11.3 with 11.2 running either in VMware or KVM, as you will have access to identical/standard hardware.
Created attachment 351006 [details] Last lines from TTY1 from boot of 11.3 MS4 GNOME LiveCD, before system hang Just captured screen in VMware Server - last lines from Terminal 1 from boot of OpenSUSE 11.3 MS4 GNOME LiveCD, before system hangs. May be, there are few last lines are missing - but I was trying to catch info before system switched to graphics mode. It doesn't respond to keyboard after it. It's visible that GDM was starting or preparing to start.
I see that the problem lies not (only) in X/gdm since I append '3' or 'single' to grub and I get the exact same thing. That is, a black screen and an unresponsive system.
I got a similar issue like this with MS5 KDE-LiveCD. Maybe bug 585432 is also related. When the screen was black, I issued Ctrl+Alt+F2 and got to a red root prompt and could see with ps ax [...kernel threads...] 1039 tty1 S+ 0:00 /bin/sh /usr/lib/YaST2/startup/YaST2.Second-Stage 1388 ? Has anyone reproduced this with MS6?
(In reply to comment #35) > Has anyone reproduced this with MS6? No, M6 was the first one that worked without this problem for me.
If there is no problem since 11.3M6, we close this bug
