I boot the LiveCD and start openSuse. After successful installation from the Live Installer I reboot the System. After chosing "OpenSuse" it wants to boot up the operating System but eventually hangs up on a black screen. The last message I see when booting up is: "Starting HAL Deamon..." then the display changes and goes black. After that nothing works anymore. No Mouse and Keyboard Input react. I can only switch off and on the Computer. "Failsafe" Mode does not work either.

This issue is the same as in Milestone 2.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Boot up into openSuse Live
2.Install from LiveCD Installer
3.Reboot Computer
Actual Results:
Black Screen

Expected Results:
Boot into installed version of openSuse.

Hardware:
Notebook Samsung R522 with Core 2 Duo T6400
4 GB Ram
Ati Mobility 4650

I have more detailed information to append:

I found out that after the Installation (from the Live System) and the following reboot, YAST needs to finish some configuration. And obviously it is exactly this thing which goes black. If I press Ctrl+Alt+F7 or F8 on the resulting black screen the screen changes from black to a strange white grid like this:

http://e.imagehost.org/0566/DSC00004.jpg

In the top left corner you can see some icon which should be a lizard-symbol in fact. I am pretty sure that it came from the YAST configuration tool. The configuration however can never be finished because the screen is unreadable.

Another important point: let's assume I have not installed openSuse yet and I am just putting in the openSuse CD into the drive and start the computer up: the CD boots into the menu. Now if I want to choose a direct Installation (and not booting a Live System) following happens: a green bakcground with the lizard appears and obviously openSuse is loading some files into the RAM (my guessing). After that the YAST screen SHOULD appear - but in fact it doesn't. I also ends up with the same black screen or white grid.

I also tried out options like apm=off or acpi=off but it didn't change anything. Also I tried it out on the KDE CD, but it happens the same.

I have found out something new on this black screen issue. I recall the exact steps here; and I can reproduce them anytime:

First of all, the installation must be successful. Then the system reboots. Now I can choose Failsafe or the Standard openSuse from the bootloader. It does not matter which one. After that a darkgreen loading screen (with lizard and progressbar) appears which eventually changes into Textmode. The last thing I see before the black screen appears is "Starting HAL-Deamon". And exactly when I see this I must press Ctrl+C and the boot continues as usual!

After starting up however the system seems very slow and needs whole lot of CPU Power. Even moving the 2D windows stutter a little bit. Also I need to press this Ctrl+C every time I want to boot up openSuse, otherwise it ends up in the black screen again.

The issue appears to be in:
/usr/lib/YaST2/startup/YaST2.call

I don't think /usr/sbin/testX is actually installed during the install. It isn't on my system after finishing the second stage when booting with nomodeset. This makes the wait_for_x11() function hit an infinite sleep 1 loop.

Vincent wanted to get rid of sax2
Comment 7 Vincent Untz 2010-04-08 12:21:27 UTC
So that would be a yast issue? It shouldn't wait forever...

Yast team: see comment #5.
Comment 8 Arvin Schnell 2010-04-09 09:42:05 UTC
Sorry, but the YaST start scripts need the testX program (it starts
the xserver). No testX -> no X11 installation.

I can only add a requires to sax2 but I suppose that is not a desired
solution.
Comment 9 Arvin Schnell 2010-04-12 12:31:39 UTC
I have improved the scripts to use textmode if testX is missing.

But testX must be readded anyway to the LiveCD.
