Description Carlos Robinson 2010-04-18 02:29:14 UTC
* Windows do not have the colored bar on the top with minicons (like the 'X' to close the window).

 * Keys like "alt-F2" to call commands are ignored.

 * Keys like Fn-Print-screen are ignored.

 * Commands typed on an xterm are printed in greek letters. No, I do not have screenshot as printscreen capture does not work. The typed command works and prints correctly, though.

 * When I move the mouse, icons and entries are highlighted, as if the button was pressed.

 * gnome control panel entries do not redraw till I move the mouse all over the window.

Everything works the moment I disable compiz.

System has been just installed, this is first use, with 11.3 M5 i586 (hardware is x64 but M5-x64 has been reported broken).

This is a compaq presario CQ61-330SS (SMOLT profile

I have some problem with milestone 5.
no redraw every applications: pages in firefox, selections of file in nautilus and other
If disable compiz, redraw works correctly.

openSUSE M5 64-bit. and i have notebook with intel graphics adapter too.
Comment 2 Zachary Klein 2010-05-06 23:38:13 UTC
I can confirm this issue on M6 - also running Intel graphics (GMA X4500MHD). Seems to be an issue with Compiz across all desktops - at least I can confirm it on LXDE.

Is 11.3 going to ship with a broken compiz on Intel gfx?
Comment 3 Martin Seidler 2010-05-11 16:26:07 UTC
With Intel 915GM, a 1400x1050 display, openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 6, kernel 2.6.34-rc6-7-default (32 bit), GNOME 2.30 and compiz 0.8.6-1.6 I have an equal problem with compiz turned on (and not if I turn the hole compiz off). I can live (and work) without 2-D and 3-D effects (although the fonts are not so sharp, too) so this problem is not critical for me.

But compiz (with not advanced settings) works fine in my actualised openSUSE 11.2 with kernel 2.6.31.12-0.2-default on the same laptop/notebook.

Detailed description:

At first I got no top panel on the window (="window decoration"?). The small graphic buttons came only later as I go into the menues.
As I reduced the features in the CompizConfig Settings Manager I got the top panel back again.
When I chose a second register card with compiz turned on I am first not able to see the content of that card. I see the content of that second only after I have chosen a third card or have moved the hole window.
In compiz I am not able to turn Wobbing Windows or Minimize Effect off.

Compare/See Also:

The actual Ubuntu 10.4 seems to have problems with some intern intel graphic/intel onbord graphic, too. For example see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1474759 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/554904

Solution/Workaround (?):

At least should compiz be turned off by default in 11.3 if the problem is not fixed in the final release. Maybe a option of a different/older kernel version should offered to intel graphic users?
Comment 4 Martin Seidler 2010-05-11 16:59:18 UTC
P. S.: Can this bug depend on the new intel driver "xf86-video-intel-2.11.0" in openSUSE 11.3?

Of course, if by the close-up the driver did not get stable enough to host compiz on an intel chip, the driver will be blacklisted and compiz will not start on those machines.

Video showing problems

I add a video (viewable with Realplayer, can't help it) showing the problem.

I have also found and reported (Bug 605856) flickering problems during install of M6 - could it be related?

In both cases the video driver is probably causing an issue. Compiz is not running during the installation.

@Stefan: Do you have any information regarding such issues with the Intel Drivers currently in M6?

Hmm. During installation fbdev driver is still running. So this can't be the problem here.

Maybe the problem has something to do with the not fitting entry in the Video BIOS VBIOS for my screen resolution in the graphic card.

intel 915GM WITHOUT compiz on (compiz has problems)
#959581 - Pastie http://pastie.org/959581
Which seems to make sense if it is telling me that my VBIOS has not an entry for my screens resolution (1400x1050).

intel 915GM (with compiz on and this seems to be in order)
#959570 - Pastie http://pastie.org/959570

Is there any workaround for not fitting resolutions in the 11.2 which is not in the 11.3 M6/Factory?
Or is that just because I have the old /home (form 10.x?) in the 11.2?
I tried to edit the settings in 11.3 (resolution, framebuffer?) but sax2 (which I had used once upon a time (10.x?) ) did not work - brakes sometimes all my graphic output.

Do you need more date? Which?

Comment 10 Martin Seidler 2010-05-18 11:37:22 UTC
It seems to me the stable version of the linux kernel 2.6.34 is in the kernel repository for openSUSE_11.2:

Index of /repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/openSUSE_11.2/i586
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/openSUSE_11.2/i586/
kernel-default-2.6.34-33.1.i586.rpm 17-May-2010 20:36 35M Mirrors Metalink
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/openSUSE_11.2/i586/kernel-default-2.6.34-33.1.i586.rpm

I.
Should I
- try this for my openSUSE_11.3 Factory or
- wait till it is in the Kernel:/HEAD/Factory or
- wait till it is in the http://download.opensuse.org/factory/repo/oss/suse/i586/ (now there is only kernel-default-2.6.34-7.5.i586.rpm of 15-May-2010 04:35)?

II.
Is there also a chance to try another video driver? I tried to do as described in http://forums.opensuse.org/information-new-users/unreviewed-how-faq/430150-opensuse-graphic-card-practical-theory-guide-users.html#post2099022 but with no success: I could only change to the vesa driver and learnt that this driver does not work at all on my laptop with 11.3 m6/factory.

III.
Or which compiz or mesa may I try to work with openSuse 11.3 Milestone 6(+x)/Factory and my i915GM internal graphic card/Intel Graphic Media Accelerator 900?

IV.
Or should I try to install Ubuntu 10.4 (in place of Milestone 6) and post here if it works with my Samsung X20 1730 V / SX20S laptop?

V.
Is there any chance that something form "855resolution" out of (open)SuSE10.x remained in the /home of 11.2 or the installation method (DVD for 11.2 and live CD for 11.3 Milestone 6) had influence on the difference?

Tried this but it did not help,
Nor did the Milestone 7 work with compiz properly.

This works fine but it runs only on linux kernel

But today I found this:

Could this bugreports/patches have a chance to do a change on this bug here?

Your 'screen painting' issue should be solved with latest compiz / compiz-manager packages. (for an existing user, make sure to enable the plugin 'workarounds' that solves many of those errors.

For new users, compiz-manager now detects that there is no config and put's a initial setup in the user's home directory.

As for the comment #0, the various key shortcuts not working, that was due to the missing gnome compatibility plugin not being loaded (also solved with the new compiz-manager)

No ISO (yet) available, as they were really only just checked in to Factory.

I started that image from CD and updated all packages from the repository above
but with compiz desktop effects on there is still the last tabs shown not the actual. Same with CompizConfig Settings Manager installed and workarounds activated by default.

This seems to help in the newest versions if activated:
CompizConfig Settings Manager>workarounds>
Fix screen updates in XGL with fglrx.
Comment 18 Andreas Jaeger 2010-06-02 12:45:47 UTC
I reported something similar in bnc#594726. but for me the new version does not help.

If I run ls in gnome-terminal quite often the terminal is not redrawn *BUT* if I enable the fix screen updates in XGL with fglrx on my INTEL G945 card it suddenly starts to work (just the 1 minute testing).

This is really strange IMO.

I'm not considering this fixed until the new packages are actually in openSUSE:Factory thus reopening.

Updated compiz-manager was checked-in to Factory on May 28:
http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-commit/2010-05/msg00626.html

The problem you might see is that the logic tries to detect if you have a config (it does not find out if broken or not). If no config exists, it creates a new one (hopefully working). If a config exists, it is being used.

can you try deleting / renaming "$HOME/.config/compiz/compizconfig-1/Default.ini" and see if the new result is more useful?

It's also possible that the default plugins need further tweaking (the default plugin handling is completely different as it used to be in 11.2, as we had compiz 0.7.8 then, now we're on 0.8.6)
Comment 21 Andreas Jaeger 2010-06-02 20:40:11 UTC
This sounds bad - I use the same home partition right now for 11.2 and 11.3. And now I need to play with compiz settings each time since what works in 11.2 does not work in 11.3 and vice versa ;-(

I'll play around a bit more tomorrow.

Whats about a new user with an other (higher) ID number for 11.3 (as a workaround not a solution)?

What versions are you (plural)/we really testing/taking about?

Has someone jet tested today's in the compiz-factory repository? What are the differences?

With GNOME ISO 650 (openSUSE-GNOME-LiveCD-i686-Build0650-Media.iso) started there is still this lazy desktop effect.

It disappeared if in "Desktop Effects" = "Simple CompizConfig Settings Manager" the "Enable desktop effects" was clicked off.
There was no other compiz manager in the "Control Center" to set all or specific workarounds on.

Than I marked in "Software Magager - Yast2" for updating and upgrating all possible from the regular (factory) repostitory (about 7 packages, no compiz to see).
As "compizconfig-settings-manager - Settings Manager for Compiz (CCSM)" version 0.8.4-2.3 was not installed I marked it for installing. I clicked "Apply" to run the installation to my RAM disk.

After that I enabled in the "Simple CompizConfig Settings Manager" the desktop effects and there was again still this lazy effect. So I disabled effects.

I entered the new installed CCSM. Workarounds were enabled. But as I entered "Workarounds" the "Fix screen updates in XGL with fglrx" was not. So I enabled it.

After that in "Simple CompizConfig Settings Manager" I enabed desktop effects again. The lazy effect did not come back.

I think if this status (as desribed) remains in the live CDs to the official release this would be an unnecessary anti-marketing effect for testing users of intel graphic. Not many will go as far to test if or in what case 11.3 works.

Could the compiz 0.8.x configuration file in the official release not just have an other name by default?

New compiz-manager with fglrx workaround enabled has just been check-in into Factory:
http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-commit/2010-06/msg00042.html.

@AJ: you mention you use the same config folder /home partition on 11.2 / 11.3: the configs should be compatible to each other, so your problem seems slightly different. Can you check if libcompizconfig-backend-gconf is installed?
Comment 26 Andreas Jaeger 2010-06-03 19:42:34 UTC
libcompizconfig-backend-gconf was not installed on my 11.3 system, I'll install it now.

I'll play a bit further around and open another bugreport if needed. Thanks!

Will the new one be part of the live CD? (new one =? compizconfig-settings-manager - Settings Manager for Compiz (CCSM) =? compiz-manager 0.6.0-8.1.noarch.rpm 03-Jun-2010 15:53 12K?) Will it be in the USB Images (http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Factory:/Live/images/ )?

Or will no compiz programs be included and just a trigger/substitute packages-package for all compiz programs be in the Yast2 Software Manager and recommended?

What is the name used here for 32 and 64 bit platforms for 80386 followers (PC)?

I have been trying out the version of compiz with the fglrx workaround enabled from
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/Compiz/openSUSE_Factory/

The fglrx workaround does solve the laziness problem in all the applications and terminal display also renders correctly now. However when it is enabled on my INTEL 945G chipset, the effects suddenly become very choppy. The performance of glxgears which is around 60fps without the fglrx workaround, drops to around 30fps as well. When only the fglrx workaround is turned off, the effects work without the choppiness, but the problems with terminal display and refreshing display returns.

The effects with KDE's compositing does work well on the other hand.

Issues with the intel driver are currently tracked in bug 610323.

Thanks for the above pointer. Now I updated the X11 stack from the build service repository mentioned in bug 610323, and then removed my compiz profiles and restarted the computer. I still had to disable the "fglrx" workaround to make the desktop effects smooth and non-choppy. The good thing is that with the updated Xord stack, disabling the fglrx workaround does not return the problem with redrawing of the applications. So everything works with the updated Xorg stack from the obs repository but only after disabling the fglrx workaround.

Started from the live CD of the day before yesterday
openSUSE 11.3 Milestone 7+x seems to work including the compiz effects and without the need to install any additional software or any change.
(openSUSE-GNOME-LiveCD-i686-Build0663-Media.iso 06-Jun-2010 14:18 680M downloaded from http://download.opensuse.org/factory/iso/ ). The live installation includes compiz-manager 0.6.0-8.1 from the 02nd of June 2010. No compizconfig-settings-manager (CCSM) was needed.

The above described lazy effect is gone.
Thanks to Dominique Leuenberger and all other involved folks!

Maybe it would be fine if the original reporter (or all other?) would test again?

[I will go on testing the performance and report in the other bug report thread (if I have success in making a live USB or at least in a normal install on a USB drive). It seems to me the turning cube does only turn if I choose an other virtual desktop in the panel and not if I reach the left or right edge of my desktop (in contrast to the default settings) but this bothers me not much and is the same in my 11.2 in my remembrance.]

In all the compiz versions that I have tested with 11.3, the Fade plugin is disabled by default. Please have this enabled as it has been there for as long as I can remember and it really makes the effects look much better.

Thanks.

This is a complete different issue... sorry, but this bug is already scattered enough. Pleas create a separate issue for it.

Sorry too, I just wrote that here without thinking too much. I will create a new bug for this as you suggest.

Considering the positive feedback from above, based on the new intel driver and the various fixed flown into compiz-manager in pre-selecting a sane set of plugins, I think the report should be closed

The original reporter's issues were based on the configuration issue (the various key shortcuts not working) and the intel driver (repainting not working).

Those issues have been confirmed to be solved by now (all packages are in openSUSE:Factory)

Should you see other bugs, please feel free to report them as well!
