When you get a policykit dialog asking for a password in KDE, there is an option to remember the password. This option doesn't work, though. It still asks you for a password the next time you do the action.

Reproducible: Always

Comment 2 Todd R 2011-03-17 19:15:14 UTC
I don't think this is a duplicate. It is a different password dialog using a different backend. kdesu and policykit are no the same thing.

Policykit dialog

Here is the dialog I am talking about. If you compare this to the dialog in the other bug report, they are definitely different dialogs.

Further, policykit (which this dialog uses) and sudo (which the other dialog uses) are not the same thing.

So I don't think this is a duplicate.

Yes you are probably right. Sorry for not seeing the difference directly. Reopening.
Comment 5 Thomas Rother 2011-04-02 16:42:56 UTC
I can confirm this behaviour for two different updated 11.4 machines. A similar (but not identical) issue is visible for the energy settings: If I tell KDE to dim the screen after 10 minutes, I get a request for the root password. This entry is not stored, I havbe the same request again and again after the next 10 mins. even within the same user session.

From the duplicate report/the corresponding upstream report (for the font installer) which confirms that this a openSUSE bug:

Editing
/var/lib/polkit-1/localauthority/10-vendor.d/org.kde.fontinst.manage.pkla, and
changing this from:

[org.kde.fontinst.manage]
Identity=unix-user:*
Action=org.kde.fontinst.manage
ResultAny=auth_admin
ResultInactive=auth_admin
ResultActive=auth_admin

------
To:

[org.kde.fontinst.manage]
Identity=unix-user:*
Action=org.kde.fontinst.manage
ResultAny=auth_admin
ResultInactive=auth_admin
ResultActive=auth_admin_keep

Fixes the issue on openSUSE 11.4 for me. I've no idea where this
org.kde.fontinst.manage.pkla comes from, or why ResultActive was not set to
auth_admin_keep - which is what it should (and needs to) be.

This bug still occurs with openSUSE 12.1 RC1.
Comment 9 Stephan Kulow 2011-11-17 12:28:20 UTC
auth_admin_keep is a different beast. then polkit remembers that user $FOO is admin for this - this bug talks about the checkbox in the polkit-kde dialog.

And the checkbox is simply bogus as polkit does not support keeping passwords. If the user has set auth_admin, the user has to auth - *every* time.
