Firefox starts up slow

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:11.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/11.0 Installed openSUSE 12.1 AMD64 KDE, on a new laptop with 4GB of ram. Noticed that Firefox takes about 30 seconds to startup (from clicking Firefox icon to able to see/use Firefox). Once startup, Firefox performs normally. Brand new install of openSUSE 12.2 Milestone 2 and still the same experience. Startup time of Firefox on same computer running Debian is ~2 second. Delete firefox profile - so all settings are remove 2. Starts firefox - so a new profile is generated 3. Close firefox 4. Starts firefox and record the time taken for firefox startup. Actual Results: Firefox startup takes approximately 30 seconds Expected Results: Firefox should startup faster ? (no ideal what you experts are experiencing). Don't think it's a show stopper but definitely not appealing to new users.
A few comments: Startup time is influenced by a lot of stuff so it won't be easy to identify why it happens for you. A Firefox cold start directly after booting takes 10 seconds for me using WindowMaker as window manager. The amount of RAM should be that much of an issue. I can test on KDE a bit later today. Actually I have no 12.2 installation yet to compare if there is an issue there. There is a lot of time consumed in IO since the Firefox libs are BIG. So are your 30 seconds a cold start? Probably not given your reproduction steps. And your Debian startup time is also a cold start under KDE? I cannot believe the 2 seconds for cold start under KDE ;-) One possibility would be installing "About startup" and checking the output if there is any information about the slowness there.
Hi Wolfgang, In case you wanted to test it, there is no need to install 12.2, I experience the same "slowness" in 12.1. Just for you :D I've did my very first screencast and uploaded to http://www.mediafire.com/?inyfeh3dt1hmhxr Note the time taken from clicking icon (bouncing) to Iceweasel generates file (shown in dolphin) and starts up. You mentioned that you are using WindowMaker. Intend to install fluxbox and try it out on openSUSE. Appreciate if you could advise how to get networkmanager to start and show in the systemtray during startup, thanks. If you prefer,feel free to email me directly.
Accidentally found out the Firefox in openSUSE actually can start very fast (within few seconds) provided wireless is not connected. This is what happens: 1. boot up laptop and strayed too far away from wireless router and laptop cannot connect to wireless router 2. starts firefox and it pops up within 4 seconds. Goes back within range of router and gets the wireless connection 1. starts firefox and it takes much longer time to start Any idea how to remedy this? By the way, this is a 12.2 M2, KDE4 Live CD installation (with fluxbox installed) Rebooted and login into fluxbox proves the same.
Update : Disable laptop's wireless and connect to router via RJ45 1. kills all apps that connects to internet (kopete, packagekit etc) 2. starts firefox and it also takes much longer time to start seems like firefox is slow to start when the laptop has an internet connection. Hope the info is helpful.

Created attachment 496123 [details] Video showing Firefox startup time - with and without internet connection. Just installed openSUSE 12.2 Beta 2 and recorded Firefox's startup time when it is with and without a wireless connection. (Should be about the same duration, right?) When compared to other distro that I'm using, Firefox in openSUSE start up realllyyy slow. Just wanted to highlight this fact. Hope it makes sense.
An update, if anyone cares In KDE LiveCD AND Gnome LiveCD mode with wireless connection (100Mb Line), Firefox starts in approximately 12 -15 seconds Disconnect the wireless connection, Firefox starts in under 2 seconds for both. Installed openSUSE 12.2 KDE onto laptop, similarly, with wireless connection (100Mb Line), Firefox starts in approximately 12 -15 seconds. Disconnect the wireless connection, Firefox starts in under 2 seconds for both. Deleted the Firefox profile and copy the Firefox profile form Debian (which starts under 3 seconds), the same startup time of 12 -15 seconds encountered. Am I the only one that encounter this problem?
