The manual page for lowriter(1) describes -p as:

       -p file...
              Prints the given files to the  default  printer  and  ends.  The
              splash screen does not appear.

However, the LibreOffice 4.1.5.3 as shipped with openSUSE 13.1 does still show the splash screen when invoked as

     lowriter -p mydocument.odt

This is an upstream issue. Reported it there:
