Bugzilla – Bug 958504
Constant background noise on T440s and loud cracking noise after audio powersave
Last modified: 2016-05-10 00:23:37 UTC
Created attachment 658834 [details] alsa-info output The Lenovo T440s has a constant background noise on the headphone output if the audio device is not muted. The issue in general is hardware related but on Windows it is lower, barely noticeable. Here is a description of other users: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/T440s-speaker-noise/td-p/1339883 The second issue is that when you activate audio suspend a loud cracking noise is emitted. This also doesn't happen on Windows where the audio device is muted automatically if not used without any clicking. It is only noticeable because the low background noise disappears.
I have tested different quirks which Takashi provided, and there were two which fixed the issues for me. The loud cracking noise during activation of powersave(`echo 10 > /sys/module/snd_hda_intel/parameters/power_save`) was fixed by adding "spec->shutup = alc_no_shutup;". With this option there is only a very low click emitted, which is almost as good as on Windows. So the audio powersave option becomes actually usable, I disabled it before in laptop-mode because it would hurt your ears otherwise. With the the quirk "mixer_nid = 0" the background noise was reduced to the level of Windows, so it is much less annoying then before.
Thanks, the patch I'm going to submit / merge to upstream is found below.
