Comment 4 Robert Frohl 2022-09-19 13:09:30 UTC
There exists a use-after-free in io_uring in the Linux kernel. Signalfd_poll() and binder_poll() use a waitqueue whose lifetime is the current task. It will send a POLLFREE notification to all waiters before the queue is freed. Unfortunately, the io_uring poll doesn't handle POLLFREE. This allows a use-after-free to occur if a signalfd or binder fd is polled with io_uring poll, and the waitqueue gets freed. We recommend upgrading past commit fc78b2fc21f10c4c9c4d5d659a685710ffa63659

https://nvd.nist.gov/vuln/detail/CVE-2022-3176
Comment 6 David Disseldorp 2022-09-26 10:17:03 UTC
The mainline fix is implemented via 791f3465c4afd ("io_uring: fix UAF due to missing POLLFREE handling"), which is based on the aio fix 50252e4b5e989 ("aio: fix use-after-free due to missing POLLFREE handling"). The aio fix has been backported into the SUSE quilt tree via suse-commit ee17f5cf5e18b0109d704e031cc08428c15db650 .

The upstream stable-only io-uring fix fc78b2fc21f10 ("io_uring: disable polling pollfree files") is quite minimal in that it simply blocks (-EOPNOTSUPP) binder and signalfd callers. However, the new file_operations.may_pollfree member may be problematic due to our kABI. As such I think we're stuck with:
- find some way to use stable fc78b2fc21f10 while retaining kABI
- avoid the new file_operations.may_pollfree member, but use a similar check for filtering out signalfd callers (e.g. fops == signalfd_fops)
  + binder can be ignored, as we build without CONFIG_ANDROID
- attempt to backport the proper 791f3465c4afd mainline fix

I've gone ahead with this approach for the cve/linux-5.3 branch, but would appreciate some feedback on whether others think it's suitable - @Dirk: any thoughts?

@Jack: would you mind taking a glance at the attached https://bugzilla.suse.com/attachment.cgi?id=861776 ? It diverges slightly from stable (commit fc78b2fc21f10c4c9c4d5d659a685710ffa63659 ) to preserve SLE kABI.
Comment 10 Jan Kara 2022-10-11 16:14:11 UTC
FWIW your workaround looks good to me David.

Dirk, the kABI change is in struct file_operations which is definitely used by many external modules so there's no easy way we could change that structure.
Comment 12 Karasulli 2022-10-26 07:24:54 UTC
Going through some old CVEs to clean up BZ searches [1].

@David, any updates on this?
